Charged in. Got mauled by a direwolf, a wolverine and a light.
They were distracted by my allies.
Shut down and played dead.
They took a long hard look at me, assumed one of them had finished me off and walked away.
I must be in a low ELO bracket?!

If mechs didn't die standing up in this game, you would have been screwed LOL.
Luckily somone must have died on your team the same time you shut down. Each one of the 3 enemies attacking you just assumed you died by the other and died standing up-right.
Lucky you, I can't imagine that works most very often.

Ha ha... I have seen this happen and have done it also, it really only works if you are blown all to hell, missing leg, arms, torso's, and smoke rolling off your mech. I had one match where I died on HPG and a enemy Kitfox was trying to hold off 4 of us with his teammate in a direwolf. They killed the dire whale and lost track of the Kitfox and I just happened to see him shutting down. I told them about it right when he did but they went off trying to chase other mechs.
Kitfox turned out to be the last mech, and it took them several more minutes to find him, even with me telling them right where I thought he was. The other team kept messing with them and calling off fake positions, so one of my lance mates finally started to listen to me and found the Kitfox that was playing dead. lol.

It's a nice trick to pull if you want to live through a match, however now that it's been announced people are going to start head shotting Mechs to make sure they are dead.

You are lucky that none of them had BAP.

Just graze a laser anywhere on the mech; if the crosshair flashes red, keep shooting.

You'd be surprised. I do it all the time.

This one time, I wasnt paying attention to my team on Caustic, and they started circling without me. Suddenly me and a couple of light mechs got swarmed by the enemy team, and I just powered down, since I had lost a limb and could pass as dead to anyone without BAP. It worked like a charm, even though I was probably at 75% health or more. Then I powered back up after they walked past me.
Like I said, I do it all the time. But that was the only time I tried it on open ground, with 75% health, surrounded by enemies.
On the other hand, you will sometimes run into smart and experienced players who know something's fishy. Either because the kill counter didn't change or because they press TAB to see what players are still alive, and already noticed what mech you're piloting. And then you'll get an alpha strike in the face while you're powered down.

And that is why I have BAP on most of my 'Mechs.

I've done it before in a TDR on River City. I had 2 LL left. I was just waiting for 3 of the 4 mechs to pass by. Woke up and killed the 4th.
Proceeded to flank with my allies on the other side. You can imagine the surprise.
That's the only time it ever worked for me but man it was GLORIOUS.
