Yes, for sure!
In some situations it could be a tactical item

I vote yes.

The new caustic map at night shows several lamps which have an illumination cone. Such makes me hopeful this will be pursued...

I thought it was a stupid idea until this.

Lol.

It would definitely add another dimension to night battles. :)

I would love searchlights for my brawlers at night, big ol light in their face while I am stripping their armor with lasers.

Sure, why not? You can trigger them on when you get close for illumination and to blind anyone who might be using Night Vision.

While we're on the subject, how about flares like in MW4? Those were a lot of fun! :)

Gasp no! More immersive features you say? Too much to code. On the other hand, we have these new shiny distrac... er mechs. Buy?

Any map with the night cycle needs this. Their is a big difference between using the other visions.

Yes absolutely - provided that it completely flares out low-light vision for a few seconds if directly (I do mean directly) shone at a mech that has it on. The caveat is that the mech that has the spotlight on has penalties to remaining hidden to target lock even it has ECM active.

It would already blind people since that is how the low light feature works. Any light source produces glare (which makes some maps tough because they are dark but there are bright lights nearby), so a searchlight, being a light source, will be a glare in the eyes of someone who looks right into the beam.

I see no reason not to have it. However, I would also like darker nights with our search lights (y'know, so the light has some utility).

I was just thinking about suggesting this, especially as we have a few mechs (Warhammer, Rifleman) and potential mechs (Longbow) with big searchlights that would really 'shine' with this addition.

The Mechs we have that I remember carrying searchlights are the Warhammer the Thunderbolt I don't remember the Rifleman having one at all and the illustrations do not show one. The Marauder however has powerfull flood lights retained from its development.
the blinding of pilots with search light weather in night vision mode or not is not a good idea and as mechs use multiple sources of information for vision rather ineffective

Dude, even on canyon network, I cant tell whom i should be shooting at half the time. It isnt that I'm blind, its that the unit marking system is really poorly designed, and the fact that everyone is green doesnt help. until you get a lock, you dont know if thats friend or foe.

Even if it doesn't blind the enemy I'd sure love some extra light. And it would look cool!

And if they added Day and Night cycles to ALL the maps then this would mean something. The Search light should have a conal and/or Beam option.

vision modes should require skill tree unlocks in order to use. but the searchlight should be standard equipment on all mechs. and flares should be consumable items as well (you should get 2 illumination flares per consumable slot).

that way searchlights wouldnt be strictly inferior to vision modes because vision modes would require skill points to use.

The only minor reason I could think of against this is the graphical performance impact of all those dynamic lights happening at once.

I think that's why they didn't do this. Since shaders usually only handle 4 dynamic lights (iirc) they'd have to code in some kind of wrapper that aggregates all the dynamic lights.

In a typical full match that's 24 dynamic lights that would have to somehow efficiently squeeze down to 4 or less.

If any of you know how this can be done then please shed some light on it (pun!)
