I wasn't aware that ammo only had a 1.4% chance to cook off

That should be 10% (if the ammo box is destroyed).

(Related as I can't remember: Is there a chance to blow ammo without reducing it's hit points to 0 first?)

The way CASE works from my understanding, is that its basically a failsafe for the CT. It will not prevent your side torso from disintegrating by an ammo explosion. If the ammo i n the leg were to expload, it would destroy the leg (internal structure - total damage of stored rounds), where the leftover will be sent off to the side torso, 75% of it. Same formula happens.

Now this is where CASE comes into play. Instead of sending the remaining damage to the CT, it vents it straight out of the chassis, negating the risk of dying from an event. This is useful for brawling mechs, or LRM boats with ammo everywhere. Indeed you will lose half a mech, but it's better than nothing.

Now to your question. No, CASE will not do its job if the torso it was housed in is destroyed. This is simple logic. If you lose a torso, you lose everything in it. The ammo explosion from the leg will simply be redirected to the CT, but at a 50% reduction because of how damage is transffered through destroyed components.

Really interesting question, OP. I believe TuntematonSika is absolutely right (certainly for IS mechs). In an IS mech, C.A.S.E. is a critical slot item and so should be destroyed with the section it is in when it initially triggers. Now what happens with a Clan mech where C.A.S.E. is a built-in? My intuition says it is the same as with IS mechs.

That's probably what should logically happen. What did PGI code? That's a mystery.

When it does blow, the only way I know is the damage I received through armor. I usually don't die. :) You don't get the indications you did in closed beta. The surging, brewing popcorn effect with vibrations within the mech until you hear the chain of explosions inside... that really let you know that it was inevitably gonna kill you.

Now.. Boom. That's it. And half the time you don't hear it.

I miss that so much, it was such a rush when they would start cooking off and you try to do the most you can with the little time you had left!
