haha, i live in a a very rural area and the best we can get is still dsl 1500... yeah right, that's ~ 175-180 kb/s download rate with an average ping of 80-90ms :(

now let's see how those NA servers can deal with me^^.

(luckily i'm studying in a bigger city atm where my connection is slightly better ;), like ~ 750kb/s download rate, ping ~30ms)

MW4 was pretty awesome in this regard because you could host and join any server you wanted.
Granted that it wasn't F2P but the multiplayer options were pretty damn good in my book.
I see how games like to do things today and I have to say that it's pretty dumbed down for whatever reasons (consoles come to mind here) and multiplayer has lost transparency and options compared to the 'good ol days'. We have effectively lost LAN capability which almost eliminated the more immediate social aspect (LAN parties). I don't know what to say about this socalled 'development' but there is definitely something PGI can do to help out the community. No matter if we end up with regional servers or not. *crosses fingers*

A similar issue with Australian servers is holding me back from spending money on any of the packs.

Zero interest in spending serious money on a game if the lag is going to be bad enough to rage at.

For comparison, I left WoW (partly due to lag), Diablo is so-so most of the time reporting high 200's at best (ignoring the quiet common 900+ spikes for what ever reason) and tribes (when I use to play it) was 20 to 400 depending on which server it joined me to.

Connection is about as best as I can get at this location (country Australia) at about 13Mb/s so me to the exchange then to ISP. From there onwards, outside my control and most ISPs are equal from that point anyway.

Would be nice to have a idea if a local server for match hosting is at least being considered before laying down so much money, otherwise I will just have to forgo any prerealse deal and see how the game goes / being prepared to walk.

Just to pop some numbers into the conversation, I am hardwired into a 50mb broadband line in the United Kingdom and a series of ping tests to west-coast Canada (where Piranha is located and presumably where the servers will be located) gave an average ping of 710 ms. To the east-coast of Canada, 610ms. By comparison, a test series to mainland Europe gave a result of 40 ms.

I have paid for the legendary founder package, so I am committed to playing the game. On the other hand, considering these kinds of numbers, I entirely understand where the OP is coming from.

Unlikely we'll see LAN capability on a F2P game, since they'd have to release the server code, sadly... I, to, mourn the days of being able to drag your PC down to a friend's house and enjoy lag-free gaming.

And yes, a LOT of games are produced for the consoles and then ported to the PC rather than developed seperately - resulting in the "dumbed down" games we're seeing in recent years. ;)

Reading your post, i just did a ping to mwomercs.com...

at 0% loss, im getting min 150ms, max 152ms. And I am atmo on an underaverage Laptop which WLans into the horribly outdated Cable connection in house at 1Mbit/sec...go figure.

Theres SO many factors involved...

I'm getting 100% packet loss when pinging mwomercs.com ;)

Obviously I can SEE it, but pings... nah...

I started out with a 56k modem. These days even playing 'across the pond' isn't usually quite as bad as that was. But it's still not good enough to prevent me from being pwned occasionally due to my lag. So when the EU servers arrive, I'll be playing on them because it will be more fun.

I just hope there isn't a need to 'migrate' or anything like that. I don't mind waiting a while for my EU data to synch with NA, or pretty much whatever it takes, I just really don't want to lose contact with the US server players.

Team games like this where a group of mechwarriors, disciplined about engaging the designated target, will do very well and have a lot of fun, are really great bonding experiences. The connections we make don't just add to the game, they add to our lives, until we might not want to play the game but we want to play with our friends and the game we met in is just the obvious choice.

So I'll play in the US and meet some awesome people, and then sadly I'll abandon them to play in Europe if that's the way it has to be. But if there's a way to get the regional servers connected and remove the need for 'migration', then I hope the devs can get it sorted for us.

Aye! ;) I hope I didn't imply that my numbers were indicative of a general trend - I was just using my own personal values to highlight why I appreciate where the OP was coming from. :(

Here are couple of quotes.

Okay European players, here is the answer you have been looking for: Yes you can buy the Founders Package and you will never be blocked from continuing to play on the North American servers. Also if we are able to set up servers in your region you will be given a onetime opportunity to transfer to those regions servers taking everything you own with you.

Again it is a very complicated matter with lots of factors.

I have an 80/20 FTTC connection and ping to the US or Euro games servers are very similar.

But in the UK there has been a trend for the big ISP's to pack as many people on an exchange with the minimum amount of bandwidth possible and some people I know have a terrible time at peak times just due to congestion.

Unfortunately even with the FTTC I am still rubbish at most game I play online.

Same here.

I can ping the PGI site just fine though, which uses the same host, and that gave me a ping of 168ms from the Netherlands.

Which is horrible for an fps, everything above 80ms is a cramp for an fps.

Try playing MW:LL with that sort of ping... guess how much fun you will have (and MWO and MW:LL use the same netcode)

Fully agree that one MWO world would be optimal. Nevertheless, there's no point in promoting one community if a significant portion of the potential community can't play due to latency. I don't know (or care) much about server architecture, but one global world has been done very successfully with EVE Online - and MWO is not an MMO so it might be easier to pull off.

You're unfortunately right, and exactly the concern I raised in the OP.

My ping from Finland to infinitegamepublishing.com is 190ms, which is unplayable for any FPS, and I presume MWO. Although this is with mobile internet (ie. using cell phone towers), I can play Tribes at 60-80ms to servers in Amsterdam, and Diablo 3 plays fine on EU servers, so it's not the fault of the connection, but the physical distance and hops to NA.

Like GreenHawk above, I can't justify spending money on MWO until I know the game is playable wherever the servers are located. I know, a bit of a chicken and egg problem for the devs... Fortunately the game is F2P so it's essentially free for me to test when the game launches. But as I pointed out in the OP, there are other reasons why a EU server at launch is desirable.

Someone, please, tell me, what kind of latency are you crying about? I'm in Russia, our ISPs mostly suck, and i play a lot on US servers. And still, i RARELY have latency higher than 150ms. Normal latency for me is 80...110ms. Yes, it is quite high, but hell, a number of people from US that i know have actually even higher latency, being in, say, Texas.
So i suggest first wait till it launches and only after that start to be upset.

Their is no reason to beg for EU servers, because they already plan on having them. They posted several clarifications on that 'if' statement. Basically it's just an if because they haven't closed the deal yet, but they have every intention of doing so (according to their many posts on this subject). They will even let you transfer over your stuff (like your founders mech, c-bills, ect).

It's possible that they may even have the EU servers up at launch (of course I'm talking about the actual launch of the game not open beta/soft launch which many of us are considering the 'launch' of the game), this is of course just my theory the devs never stated that the EU servers may be ready at that time. Their are many reasons why it won't be ready for open beta but mostly its an issue of money and time, it takes a lot of time and effort to make the partners to run the servers and servers are very expensive. It's not an issue of the devs thinking that Europe is unimportant and they can just suffer (devs if I'm mistaken and you simply don't care about europe then please correct me ;) ).

No.... thats just wrong, servers are as cheap as they where never before... even as end consumer you can get a octacore server with 32gb ram 4TB hard disk space for around 2k per year including vat...

As business you have far more options and can make a far better deal, aka buy your own hardware (meeting your specs) and only pay for the hosting itself.

i understand the OP and everyone else on this, but lets face facts this has been a major issue for all MMOs since they came into exsitence.
very few have set up in both EU and states at launch for a game, and as this is not a company on the same leel as say blizzard to expect it is just not reasonable. if it happens it happens if not be happy knowing that they have stated that EU servers will be up soon after lanch if not at lanch

P.S. this has been one of the main topics for every MMO in beta i have seen in beta for close to 10 years now

i think the mmo issue is a lil different than from in the basics is what will be a FPS. MMo's have literally thousands of players connected at one time. ( For instance, my wow server has a population of just over 5000. And thats a low populated realm). Imagine everyone connected from different world regions? Would be lag city for some players.

Hirez(tribes ascend) have EU, USA, and ASIAN servers at launch. f2p, as well as i an log on between server regions and keep the same progression. In fact, i regulary do it when my insomnia hits at 3am UK time. ( saying that...teh lag is not nice. Thats bad netcode for you though )

Tbh, if they dont have EU servers at launch and handle the transfer of progression well once they go live i dont really mind. ( would be pretty **** for me to start fresh, just cause i live in eu.)

But mwo doesn't work like a normal mmo, it works like TS:A or WoT, each game is hosted on a seperate (virtual) server and then you get back to the lobby server when the game is finished.

Depending on how demanding your game is you can host multiple virtual servers on one hardware platform, meaning you easily can host a few hundred players on one machine.
