I've always had a soft spot for Wub, though it's inferiority compared to vanilla lasers always turned me off. Earlier, I was trawling through the quirklist and SCIENCING, and noticed that the venerable Stalker 5S has some interesting changes in the pipeline:

Stalker 5S
Large Pulse Laser Range 7.5%
Energy Range 7.5%
Medium Laser Duration -7.5%
Laser Duration -7.5%
Missile Heat Gen -10%

I've enjoyed running the 5S against Clan mechs, because it has dual AMS. Couple with this the incoming laser changes in the November roadmap and you may have a case for a viable and survivable LPL Stalker!

Posted Image

So, even with the LPL duration being increased to from 0.6 to 0.67 in the NOV4 patch, with Range and Cooldown level 5's slotted in, and the quirk changes above, you'd have quad LPL with:

Duration (quirk): 0.67*(1-0.075) = 0.619s
Range (module+quirk): 365*(1+0.125+0.075+0.075) = 465.3m
Cooldown (module): 3.25*0.875 = 2.84s

Just tinkering in Smurfy, you can fit in Quad LPL, 20DHS, and DUAL AMS (AMS ammo is being doubled on Nov4). Uses endo though, for the STD300. If you take out endo, you can fit in a 275 and one extra heatsink. You'd have to stagger the alpha to avoid the lurking threat of ghost heat, but if you use fire discipline and stagger each arm between the 2.84 seconds you'd have a 22DMG 0.62s duration 14 heat laser alpha every 1.4 to 1.5 seconds. Chain fire it for DakkaWub! Mind you, the 5S has less than stellar torso twist, but if you aren't brawling in the thick of it, it shouldn't be an issue.

Also, looking at the MLAS changes:

Duration (quirk): 0.9*(1-(0.075*2))= 0.765s!!!
Range (module): 405*1.125 = 455m
Cooldown (module): 3*0.875 = 2.625s

Smurfy to the rescue again, for a laser vomit build:

Running 2 LPL + 4 MLAS, and you have very similar range, cooldown and duration between the LPL and MLAS for a 30 heat, 42DMG ghost heat free alpha strike. Also, with the free space, you could add a couple of -10% heat troll LRM5's for panic inducing goodness! Or screw the MLAS and LRM's and go FULL WUB.

Mind you, if you use MLAS and LPL, you can't fit in all the modules, but this might be the first case where I actually use the mech/weapon slot for an actual weapon module.

Using Dual AMS and the insanely hard to kill-ness of the Stalker, (though it would still have to be wary of it's main predator, the DakkaWhale) could we see a semi viable BrawlStalker?

Have you guys seen anything in the quirklist that excites you?

There's no doubt that killer stuff is in store! Pulse lasers and AMS are both being made much more viable- two things I've always loved in theory, but have been punished by in practice.

That stalker's one of many 'mechs which are gonna be toting much more wub after the update. The shape and weapon positioning of the 5S will make it compete well with the faster but more cumbersome Wubmaster. Great idea, especially considering the dual AMS. Gonna be like a big, not-made-of-glass Jester.

I've been running my Grid Iron with it's Quirk-suggested build- 3xMPL and 1xUAC5- and have been having great success with it EVEN BEFORE both systems get buffed out the wazzoo. Look out Clanners! Here comes the hurt!

I might try out a 2 LPL + 2 ML Raven just for giggles.

Sweet mother of...

Raven RVN-2X
Additional Structure (LL&RL) 4
Additional Armor (LA) 12
Turn Rate 10%
Large Pulse Laser Range 10% = 365*(1+0.1+0.125+0.2) = 520m (quirks and module)
Energy Range 20%
Large Pulse Laser Heat Gen -10% = 7*(1-0.1-0.1) = 5.6!!! (quirks)
Energy Heat Gen -10%
Medium Laser Range 10% = 405*(1+0.1+0.125+0.2) = 577.1m (quirks + module)
Medium Laser Duration -10% = 0.9*(1-0.1-0.1) = 0.72s
Laser Duration -10% = LPL = 0.67*(1-0.1) = 0.603s

BJ-1X players too will rejoice. Perhaps people might take the Thunderbutt more seriously. :P

Main issue with close ranged Stalker builds is the torso pitch and yaw angles, and the hard limit of a 310 engine.

For Assaults I'd stick with Banshee 3M (LPL total -15% heat gen, +15% range & -10% duration) & La Malinche (-20% heat gen, +20% range)

For heavies, the Fang & TDR-9S3 are getting very large LPL boosts.

Ooooh, I HAVE ME ONE OF THEM.

Blackjack BJ-1X
Torso Yaw Speed 25%
Large Pulse Laser Heat Gen -10% = 7*(1-0.1-0.1) = 5.6!!! (quirks)
Energy Heat Gen -10%
Large Pulse Laser Range 10% = 365*(1+0.1+0.125+0.1) = 483.6m
Energy Range 10%
Medium Laser Duration -10%
Laser Duration -10% = LPL = 0.67*(1-0.1) = 0.603s
Energy Cooldown 12.5% = LPL = 3.25*(1-0.125-0.125) = 2.437s

The LPL gets some love here! With that cooldown and heat gen, you'll have some insane sustainable DPS.

The BNC-3M is also getting LPL quirks. Seeing that I mastered it and sold it off (only wanted to keep the 3E), I may buy it back to get me some of that Wubshee goodness.

What excites me is some new ways to handle old mechs, but in my dearest models and setups I will not use the sheer power of quirks in full, I suppose.
My ON1-K will not sport a suggested single UAC-5 (that's kind of Medium mech attitude), it's pointless, but laser quirks and ballistic cooldown it will use with pleasure. I will also roll out my ON1-VA more, now it looks much more attractive. I love Orion brawling, but brawling comes with a price of getting beaten with a long stick on some maps. And I feel some long range maps are just tied to my brawler Orions... :(
Thunderbolt's quirks weren't much helping too. My main TDR was a pretty good universal soldier with LBX10, LL, 3ML, LRM15 setup, but lately I swapped LBX for Gauss and downgraded LRM to 10, and it has become a win-big-or-die-terribly kind of machine. With the new quirks I'll think of going back to the old build, or even trying to squeeze a second LL there.
My favorite QKD-K is getting only heat gen and PPC velocity.. It's good, but.. I still can't see how I can squeeze PPCs in there.. dump JJ?
But surprisingly they buffed Killya Muromets, that's though.. I ride this grinder too, so.. =D

Not that excited about my favorite mechs in the end, but I like the changes in general and I feel I will have some new favorite mechs. I look forward to get back to long time since abandoned cockpit of my CN-D, goodbye UAC, hello LBX, this promises to be fun.
Also I regret selling two Ravens, they also look sweet now))

And I feel I will need to save up and go for the Awesome. Always loved this mech, but have never been compelled to try it in MWO until now =)

PS. Kiiyor, what's with the science? Still looking out for your next issues ;)

I just puchased my first 8Q since before the last wipe ;)

3 PPC's all in the right side, 2 MLAS for under 90m panic, prepare for carnage!

I've got half a million GXP sitting in my 9M also just waiting to be expanded on, and i'm thinking of 2 ERPPC's, an LPL and a few MLAS. That thing will be fast and deadly. In theory.

As for the main SCIENCE, I was becoming incredibly frustrated with limitations in my software. It was taking too long to vet individual batches, EXCEL was having aneurysms, and things kept breaking, so i'm now grouping it all together into one excel -optimized number crushing 12000 match sample of DOOOOM, and doing it all at once. It was fine doing it earlier, but work has become piping hot insanity over the last few weeks and blah blah blah excuses blah blah 70 hour week! waaah. I've made some good progress, and look to release it in the next few days after the new patch drops. After the next batch, I'm thinking of dumping it all into an SQL database anyways.

PGI clearly have no idea what makes some mechs Tier 1 and some Tier 5, a shame.
