The problem? Critical space being turned into useless slices as a result of endo/ferro management systems.
As seen above, I have a total of 5 slots open, yet I can't cram in the one heatsink I need into the unoccupied slots in the right arm because of "STRUCTURE SLOTS" that, regardless of having room elsewhere, are not movable.
Solution? Make everything a dynamic slot-- make a counter next to tonnage of how much critspace you use out of your max. That way we're not crippled by the shoddy auto-placement now.
I can't imagine implementation would be that soul crushing, anyway.

You see how you only have one "Empty Slot" there. That means you actually only have one free slot.
The old UI would have told you that like "1(+6 dynamic slots) free". I kind of miss that.

You used to be able to get around this by placing the engine last assuming you actually have enough slots to begin with. No idea if it still works though.

Like has already been stated, you actually only have 1 free crit slot open (hence, only one place with "empty slot" where all the others are taken up by "dynamic slot". You just have 6 different places available for you to put it.
I was stumped by this same thing in the past, so you're not alone. It could definitely be fixed by changes to the user interface in the mechlab.

You don't have 5 open slots, you only have 1 open slot.
