oh FFS !

Dear Devs,

Please save us.

For we have gone astray!!

<_<

I'm going to side with Metro on this one. You can't just tell folks who they can or can't be IF they are going to be a Mech Unit. As for Houses and Clans, I'll defer to the Devs on their solution ... They are smart Guys.

If the Devs want to act like ***** and filter, restrict and tell the players what they can and can't call themselves, this game won't last beyond the first week of release.

There will obviously be a restriction on racist/offensive names (sorry, no Clan F***k Yourself) but to tell someone that they can't run tags that they have been using for years because it's not true to canon and would make the Baby Jesus of BattleTech cry is ludicrous.

So let's say that all units are restricted to only canon names, well now you all need to drop your pilot name and re-register as a character in that unit. What? Can't find enough canon names to give everyone that's joined one? Oh well, thanks for signing up but we're out so **** off?

No.

Restrict racist names and offensive names, but don't tell someone they can't be Clan WTFPWN because it's not "canon".

(even though anyone who says "wtfpwn" "l33t" or "r0x0rs" should be auto banned IMO)

That is just outright silly. If you will not play after the first week of release then.............bye. Look at the detail the devs have put in to re-create the BT universe. You want them to allow Clan Pancake Flippers? You can ragequit after a week if you like. That is your business. There are LOTS of units to choose from combining IS & Clans & even MORE subunits. e.g. If someone is in Clan Wolf they can join:

These units are within different galaxies. Alpha, Bravo, Charlie etc.

People are going to have a LOT of options.

Dunno about House Units but for starters, just ban all names starting or containing Clans.

It will not be long before we see Clan Wu-Tang...

Either they make a mechanic where players can join official House/Clan units in-game or they ban the use of famous merc/units companies because it'll get ridiculous pretty quick in a MMO setting with multiple wolf's dragoons, GDL, ELH etc etc.

OR they should follow the MW2/4 Merc games. Players have to create their own unique units BUT can choose to be sponsored by Houses or certain Merc companies. So for those who really wish to align themselves to a certain faction in a more official capacity, can still do so (and actually make sense).

But what about derogatory names like B***Strikers Company or ILUVB00BS Brigade?

Well, i think it should be treated as a case by case basis. They should allow players to report unit names that are inappropriate (racists, criminal etcetc) and they should swiftly act upon it. Of course, they can ban the more famous terms but they wouldn't cover it all, its not possible.

...I actually dun mind funny names like The FacePalmers Regiment or Clan LolCats tho ;)

I have a feeling they're going to go this route -- all player created units will be "mercenaries" that swear allegiance to a house, and canon unit names will be restricted from use.

Great.

So you're saying that it would make more sense for the 271st Assault Cluster to fight the 13th Battle cluster for control of XYZ planet than it would for Jimmy's Johnson's to fight Redneck Randy's Wildboys for control?

I'm glad that the hardcore BattleTech fans are here, and I hope that some of the BT lore is implemented to give this game the immersion that many are looking for, but if this becomes a straight-laced TT on-line game it will not survive.
Players need to be able to pick their pilot names and unit names as they see fit so they have the personal touch that everyone wants.

No one wants to be told that because they can only pick XYZ unit/company/lance/whatever so here is your choice of pilot names; pick one.

I have played in my guild/clan/unit/whatever you want to call it for the last 15 years. You want the devs to tell me that's not good enough because it's not canon? Please.

Couldn't agree more ! Though that said, I believe that a lot of people will try and push the limit , just to see what they can get away with.

The other side of the coin is that too many people will want to be "Wolf's Dragoons" or the "Kell Hounds" just because it is cool and everyone wants to be a hero ! So it may be "amusing" to find units with the tags of "The Real Wolf's Dragoons" or "The Proper Grey Death Legion" ^_^

Jester.

It's always been more jarring to me to see people using Canon company names/player names than it would be to see Derpy Rainbow Ponies Company.

It always felt weird having a command structure of an already written universe run by players. If someone names themselves Hanse Davion or Jaime Wolf or Morgan Kell or Katrina Steiner I'm going to be honorbound to kill them repeatedly - my own team or not.

Just wait till players in Clan Smoke Jaguars get wiped off the game, cause you were required to pick only what was available in BT lore.

Just an example... ^_^

Sorry for the long delay in reply, but I had not clicked "Follow this topic" so I never realized you replied to my post until today.

That is exactly what I am saying. I made a suggestion that those wishing to play as a Clan before their actual inclusion, simply create a merc group & use the nicknames of the specific sub-units. That way you keep to canon while being in keeping with the timeline. So sorry if Clan Pancake Flippers is not allowed. You can pick your own name obviously as the site says "register your pilot name now".

This subject may be one of the topics in the next DEV blog.

As Paul pointed out to several other threads, not all information has been released on any certain topic. He did however say to send everyone to the GAME tab up top...to keep apprised of the basics which have been touched on.

see this.......there......> While it doesnt say, you can call your Merc Unit anything you choose, It does not say you that you cannot. So speculative at best, I say everyone give them more time to address the topic.

Community Warfare:

MechWarrior® in all of its incarnations has always had a loyal following of players in one of the strongest on-line communities in gaming history. Piranha-Games hopes to bring this community together in a friendly conflict of universal control. This may sound a little odd, but it is the fun competitiveness that will keep the game alive and kicking for years to come. Utilizing the BattleTech® Inner Sphere, we plan to have skirmishes amongst the Great Houses in BattleTech® lore. Allowing the player to have an active part in this conflict is one of our key directives in designing this game. Players will be able to create, manage and customize their Merc Corp’s player base and appearance, while banding together to really delve into the Inner Sphere conflict where House alignment reigns supreme. Merc Corp leaders will bid and fight for occupation rights to some of the most valuable planets across the Inner Sphere and challenge other Merc Corps for control of planets reaping large rewards.

I think the devs will put in a racial & sexual filter then for stupid names players try to make it will reject most and send it to a filter log for future attempts at AliJahadsWankers or ClamsOfGhostBear for a merc corp who wants to fight the BigBlackButtPirates? i hope they have a good filtering system that only allows decent names.

Call yourselves whatever you want. "The Worn_Down_Tire_Treads" is cool. Just be prepared to be laughed at.... ALOT!

I have seen some very creative and humorous names over the years though. Those just make one smile is all...
