Overheating Damage Too Much?

Is overheating penalized that heavily in such a short period of time? I run hot alot. (run hot or die) I have died from over heating a few times. But what I noticed this last game was how quickly I exploded from an overheat. So is overheating damage that massive even for a tiny infraction into the 100% range?

Shut down after you kill the other person to not take 400% damage.
Damage is also randomly assigned. So, GGclose if it rolls your head, instead of your arms, legs or STs.

wish it were like TT where about halfway up that bar you start getting worried that your ammo might cook off....

I remember when I finally had the guts to try it.......fired both of my PPCs and exploded.
Never again.

It's hard to get much worse than instantly popping your head.
Except in 1.5 years of playing this game I've never had my head explode from overheating, hyperbole much?
Overheating is supposed to be a bad thing, not a "let me do it so I can score another quick kill" thing.
It's like stupidity, it should be painful, then there'd be less of it.

You've never used override?
It happens pretty often, actually. The penalties are there, they're just binary.
Nothing to dead, for the most part.

The same penalty for 105% and 400% seems pretty silly, though.
And doesn't the DireStar break the damage formula for being so far out of the damage/heat scale?

I've used override a handful of times. Only time I have ever popped was by doing it in a Nova Prime. Damage, to best of my knowledge has always been to my CT.
Here's the deal, you are OVERRIDING your safety containment. Don't matter if it redlining a car, or anything else, you do that, you risk destroying it. The further past redline you push it, the more you guarantee it. But it's not just reving past an artificial safety point, but essentially you are removing the governors. If you alpha above your capacity, the reactor goes into lockdown to avoid containment loss, hence your shutdown. If you "override" that, you risk losing contain. (Battletech physic, so hey, it is what it is)
It's pretty simple, you flip your safety measures off, you roll the dice. If it's such a part of your manual of arms that you are dying regularly from it, that's your own fault for doing it.
