To try to answer the question based on the variants available....for someone new, I'd go with something easy to master.

In this case, I'd pick Hunchback( good brawling, good stay power, enough speed to stay in the battle, and nothing too complicated to group off)
Second choice for easy to play, yet tough to master and not die all the time is the base Catapult...not my favorite Cat design for 20 years running. It does offer standoff long range capability, and if you are aware, enough speed to get out of trouble hopefully.

My third choice is hard, I know speed, scouting and all that is best served in a Jenner...but it's not my cup of tea really...I'd probably pick the Atlas as third, but mostly because I like assault more, the slow moving last line of fire closing in on you just happens to be the size of a tenement building, and packs more punch than you might think!
