I'm a literal greybeard at 47 and an OG Battletech player.

One of the interesting things about the community here is the age and number of veterans that I've found. Since it's origins stem from a strategy war game there tends to be a portion of the community that's older and more "military" minded

I've got to be honest man, it's not all that interesting. There's large amounts of verterans in all sorts of games and fandoms (ffs the brony and pokemon fandoms has a large military following, much less actual wargames and the like :P ).

Surprisingly and unsurprisingly, the few games that I have found to have a low amount of veteran/active military gamers are modern day large scale strategy games like the Wargame series, and cartoonsihly bland playgrounds for teenagers like TF2. Just my observation, but I like to think it's at least a bit close to accurate.

28.

Honestly it makes sense. Battletech is an old franchise that reached the height of it's popularity in the late 80's, early 90's and this game is marketed at those long-time fans.

32 years old.

Started playing Mechwarrior 2 31st Century Combat (ATI 3D Rage Edition) that came packaged with my then new IBM Aptiva 1996.

I was playing this game as beautiful as this. Many might not see it my way, but I preferred this version over all other versions because the mechs had high polygons which made them look more refined. The sky and ground textures where great.

I'm thirty-four. I began playing BattleTech in the early 90s with my much older cousin and his friends. I would see them sitting at the table playing for hours with these miniatures and maps and it appealed to me greatly. When I was 12 they invited me to play with them, and I pretty much spent every weekend between 1992 and 1998 with a group of guys in their mid-20s, playing until the wee hours in the morning. We'd play everything from BT to AD&D, Cyberpunk, Shadowrun, Champions, etc. My dad usually wasn't enthused that I didn't come home until after 0200 some nights, but he's come to realize that I could have been doing very stupid things with my peers instead. I got pretty lucky. All the guys were in criminal justice and were pretty straight edge dudes. Never drank with me around, never offered me a beer or anything. I learned a tremendous amount from them, not only about gaming but about life and friendship. I'm friends with them to this day and we try to get together for D&D or BT once a month or so now that I've come back home from being in the military.

Edit: Oh, and days long sessions of Axis and Allies...

35 here. Played very first Mechwarrior on my cousins computer. They have still yet to capture that feeling in any of the games. I loved taking contracts around the galaxy and saving salvage from mechs. I really miss that. I hope one day they come out with another single player game based on the original. I enjoyed piloting mechs in the sequals, but the linear missions/campaigns just did not do the original justice.

23. Got into it with MW3. MC2, MW4 and MWO followed. I'm currently reading the novels. Or at least I'm trying to. They're not easy to get here in Germany, and nearly impossible to get in English.
