Both are great, but if you had to choose one (like in my case), which of the two would it be?
Most importantly, explain why you'd choose one over the other.
Thank you

I personally don't use either as I don't really feel the benefits of these outweigh the benefits of other modules. Plus I rarely mount AMS anyway (I know all you AMS lovers will give me a hard time) as I'm pretty good at not getting hit by/targeted by missiles anyway. Of course I usually pilot mediums so I have enough speed to stay out of sight and behind cover.
If you want pros and cons, from what I know, I'd say that if you're bringing AMS to protect yourself from missiles, go for overload to give you increased protection while minimizing the amount of ammo used protecting allies. If it's more for the team, bring range so you can cover friendlies farther away.

Range. Overload has taken 6,000 ammo and reduced it into nothing before I even realized it was firing.

I was going to say overload myself so the shooting through terrain was minimized, but I dunno. Try both and see what you feel is best.

Range for more teamwork, like in a heavy or assault sticking in the deathball.
Overload for more personal protection when harrassing, flanking or going rogue in lighter and faster mechs. Turn off when not needed since it depletes ammo very fast.
Both points have been said already. I only use AMS weapon modules when at least mounting two AMS because it's not worth the module slot and a cooldown module for your primary weapon will be better most of the time.

My personal take is that they are not the best investment if you only have one AMS. They both bring a lot to dual AMS and are very effective on the triple AMS Kit Fox. However, even with the modules AMS isn't designed to be effective on a single mech--it's balanced to work when several mechs take it and overlap coverage.
With LRM speeds as they are now, my intuition is that range is better but I haven't done testing to confirm.
Also, remember that tilde (~) toggles AMS. Both modules will increase ammo consumption.

I'd go for Range in a light/medium/heavy 'mech 'cause you can always toggle it on or off if you're already under cover so you don't waste ammo.
For assaults, since you can carry that much more ammo, I'd go for overload.

I prefer range for sure, especially if I'm rocking dual AMS

That would depend on why I chose to bring AMS in the first place. AMS range is great for giving more teammates some measure of protection from missiles, AMS overload will take out more missiles if you're under constant LRM fire and is more effective near it's max range due to the DPS increase.

Just note that clans cannot use AMS Range. Just overload.
