Not very knowledgeable about these things but I know that when using DX11 my frames jump all over the place. Get much more stable framerate out of DX9

Latest should be stable, which is 344.65 - I have a GTX 970 and it works fine for me.

Try posting this in the hardware sub-forum with the spec of your PC, someone there might be able to help.

NVIDIA drivers have been balls for a long time

I've got an Asus GTX 770 and I have to run on Low everything (except textures, medium) just to get 60+ consistently

I always upgrade to the newest Nvidia graphics drivers, usually the day they become available. Have had zero driver-related issues or performance problems.

Then again, I have a GTX 980 and i5-4690K, so I shouldn't have any problems...

It's relevant. Though it would be helpful if the op had given some clue as to his own hardware.

Honestly I don't think it is, being able to run MWO with no problems with a £350 graphics card doesn't really say anything about the game.

My card absolutely shits on every other game I own, but MWO runs like shite.

Not wanting to sound like a douche, just saying I don't think its helpful if you have a top of the line card to comment on performance issues... I guess it came off douchey though

FPS problems are more often than not cpu related. My new card didn't help performance until I replaced the cpu.

I have no problems with my GTX 670 either. ;)
Running DX11 with very high custom settings and some annoying effects disabled, I don't get consistent 60fps but it rarely drops below 40.

GTX 770 like i said, if I try to run medium settings all round I drop to 33 fps at certain times

it's completely unacceptable performance

OP says their PC is "much stronger than reqs" so it could easily be in 970 or 980 territory. Without a list, we won't know.

And what kind of CPU do you have? It makes a big difference with this game. Mine's an i5 2500K 3.4GHz.

Which annoying effects I'm curious, as anything I can try to improve performance is a plus

If it helps... I only have one and it is on an old i5 2500k @ 4.4ghz currently.

Mostly it's visibility related stuff such as ( I'm doing this from memory so it might not be 100% accurate ) disabling motion blur, disabling depth of field etc. Antialiasing is the one that affects performance the most, turning it up too high can also negatively impact visibility due to poor contrast, and it doesn't seem to do much to improve those close-ups of that enemy Dire anyway.
The most important one for me was culling distance, I think I have it set to 4000 currently. However I did set it it let's me see clear across Alpine.
