Apparently this game is "Spot on perfect", "in the best state evah", and orders of magnitude greater then any other Mechwarrior game, amassing thousands of new players each week. That's if you ask the white knights, and its doom and gloom the world is ending if you ask the black knights.

PGI, why don't you just put your {LT-MOB-25} on the block and just bring back the player counter and prove how wrong the haters are?

Apparently PGI_Jon specifically stated that he doesn't know why they don't show the player numbers, since they are looking really good.

So come on PGI man up and show us yours, and maybe we will show you ours.

I think it's because people make all sorts of insane comments based on fluctuations in the numbers. At least they did in CB when the counter was there.

"OMG we had 2K less players this weekend it's proof that PGI's new camo released is a turrible business decision and they should switch to plastic furniture".

I predict, that if we added it now, there would be a deluge of whine threads along the lines of:

"25000 players and it still takes me 5 minutes to get into a match in my MadCat waaaaaaa"
"10k players this weekend and they still charge $10 for a mech waaaaa"

May or may not be justified - and though I would like to see the counter, I just don't want to see the inevitable whine threads that crush a little more of my soul each time they are vomited forth all over the front page of general.

I'd be happier if they released occasional tidbits like "this weekend we had 17,000 players in the tournament" or some such.

Did some basic math from the Stormcrow sale event about a month ago that had some good indicators on where the number of regular players was at. I came up with somewhere between 2500-3000 individual players, which when compared to how many players are usually opted into leaderboard tournaments (a figure you can gestimate based off your rank after 1 game), seems fairly likely.

Granted, not every player plays on the weekends, and for those that do, not all of them opt in to these events. I think between 5000-8000 players is a safe estimate.

It's definitely not dangerously low (see: MWLL), but it isn't high either (see: WoW). Believe it or not but we're actually kind of in a sweet spot. Feedback is still being put to good use, you can still find a game 24/7, and there's a lot of dedicated, loyal fans that will see this thing through to whichever end.

Games that have healthy populations brag about them. Games with stagnant or worse populations claim the numbers are trade secrets. Ask PGI where the player counter is and see what the answer is.

Its an important secret that must never be revealed, according to PGI. If the numbers are so good as Jon says why not show it?

You only want the numbers to be bad, so you'll have ammunition to bully PGI into doing what you want.

OP is disingenuous.

I'm pretty sure we still have those threads, but we currently do them with our tinfoil hats on.

Exactly, those threads are going to happen anyway regardless , if they can man up and show how successful the player numbers are they might actually reduce that thread count.

I think if they put the number up right now, at peak time, it would show about 9k. I think most people would consider that number as a "dead game" because other games like for example hon / wt are showing numbers 40k-70k.

Oh ffs. Who the ef cares... As long as there are other 'mechs on the field I really don't give 2 small lasers what the population is.

Honestly, so long as we can find matches who gives a frak. We will get the answers mid next year when mwo goes steam. Honestly aside from confirming or debunking the white/black knights and adding controversy to an already grumpy forum what would the knowledge actually do. Nothing. So, I honestly don't care if the numbers come out.

why?

Why does it matter how many players MWO has. If you enjoy the game, play it.

In my SCIENCE, I found around 18k unique names from around 3 months.

I'm still crunching numbers from the next batch, but thus far it's a lot higher, and it's only from around 20-30 contributors. I'm not sure of their ELO brackets either, but they mostly seem mid-high based on the general performances of contributors, so it could be that there are further multitudes milling around in the arm-lock all-weapon-alpha battlefields of trial mech territory.

Squeeze me? Are you omnipotent to know what I want? dayum you must be good. What am I going to have for dinner tonight?

Just because I "THINK" they are low, at least in oceanic times, doesn't mean I HOPE they are bad. It would just be good for a "side" to actually win and put this argument to bed. Showing how great the numbers are will actually stop some of the hypothetical bulling that goes on.

We don't need to know the numbers to realize that the population has dropped, its just we don't have know how worse or better than we actually think it is. Case in point I have actually played with people/against that are major posters on multiple occasions that's not a very good indicator of a large population. I know that isn't hard evidence but its something you'll never see in Wot or Lol or dota.

while a population of 4-10k players is decent today.....There were far more players in 2013 than there are today..... Match Maker is going derp because of lack of similar tiered players at certain time periods per day or weekends.
