Had some extra cbills, was feeling like buying a mech on impulse (a feeling possibly helped by a few gin and tonics) and I just said "eh, why not" and bought the Orion 1M because I never see them on the battlefield.

Looked at the quirks and decided to utilize what they offer. Kept the LBX10 on there, popped on 3xSRM6 and a couple medium lasers. Was about to put a standard 300 in there and then I stopped and said, "If I'm doing something stupid, why not go all the way with it", so I looked in my inventory and saw a lovely XL350. Popped that bad boy in there. For good measure I put a level 5 LBX10 cooldown module on the mech.

Drop a few matches, it's fun stuff. Drop about a dozen more, unlock the basics, and suddenly I'm just murdering everything I run into. This thing is a monster! Seriously, just a confusing, ugly monstrosity!

SRMs and MLs means a brawler, rapid-fire shotgun is nice addition if you're that close. But you give up a lot for it, big mech, no jumpjets, no ECM cover, and poor mobility (except in your case with that engine). Might work.

The Orions were really buffed from Quirks. The -V is incredible as a mid-range skirmisher. I'm only sad about the Protector. Will have to take a look at that -M.

I have to agree the M is now a BEAST!

LBX10 rapid fire is scary! I honestly was about to sell them....

The VA seems nice as well, Protector is what it is and it got AC20 buffs.

I was randomly looking through the quirk list when I stumbled on this thing and yes... it looks like it'd be a monster. Everyone was freaking out about the CN9-D with the Auto-shotgun well this is the same thing on a bigger more armored mech. Admittedly, the Orion doesn't have the best hitboxes and its quite big but it'd be brining a lot of firepower.

I'm about 800K c-bills away from purchasing it. So close.

Yeah, I was skeptical about putting an XL on an Orion, but that nice speed (83.2 after speed tweak) pairs well with the stupid fast DPS. I don't think a slower model with standard would be better just because it would be harder to get in and out of the fight as needed. You have enough armor and speed to retreat if things are going sour.

My experience, brawling with XL in an Orion is usually a sudden-death scenario since the torso weapons require you to face the target. Maybe the 350 is letting you move fast enough.

The AC20 on the VA is the dumbest quirk I've seen. That is a pure missile boat, and it is stellar at it. I seriously have to consider buying the M though. X:325 or bigger and 40LRMs with artemis and you lay waste. Got 2 eight kill games in mine.

Ever since the hitbox fix, if you get moving fast enough, you become a fast flanker/skirmisher, even with SRMs. It's just so darn tough and if you can roll damage, you can go beastmode.

Doesn't it come stock with an AC10 though? It would have been nice for the VA to be the Orion to get the AC10 buffs since no other variants give that weapon any bonuses. Also, since it comes stock with SRM4 launchers I'd have seen those being buffed too. The general quirks would have buffed LRMs for anyone who uses the VA as an LRM boat.

Honestly, the Protector and ON1-K are the ones that leave me the most confused about the quirk system. If anything the Protector should have gotten the UAC5 quirks since it has 2 ballistic hardpoints.

Anyway, I'm just griping for nothing.

Protector is great dont understand the complaints sure its not the build it started with but its great as a std engine brawler.
Mine is a mini atlas build, my k is surprisngly good switched to a quirk build and my V is still a monster missile mech.

It does, and I strip it off first thing.

Disagree with SRM4 buff. I'm usind the VA with LBX, x2 LL's and x4 SRM6 with XL300 and it's a deadly CQB machine, firing that 24 missiles and LBX in close range is impressive. Tried to use VA as an LRM boat - wasn't impressed. V was much better with x3 LRM15+A and x2 LL's.

P.S. - I have K,V and VA, running all of them with XL300 and I don't see any problems using it. Also was trying STD300 on K - haven't seen much survivability increase with it.

Sounds like a powerful build indeed. The LBX + SRM combo is always fun with my only minor gripe being that the LB rounds travel so much faster that it sometimes spreads the damage even more when you alpha everything. Better off shooting in separate bursts to maximize damage when you've got to lead your shots.

Also, I've always prefered the SRM4 to the SRM6 due to tighter spread, recycle rate and ammo consumption. Whenever I use SRM6 packs I feel like they need artemis to be worth it where as the 4 packs can work fine without it but of course this up to personal preference.

If I was to run something like you propose I'd probably do this : ON1-VA

Have been trying something like that, but mediums haven't worked for me. This is ON1-VA I'm using.
It's hot, if firing everything, but I can live with that. I'm using LL's for long range, LBX+LL's for middle range and SRM's + LBX in close range (SRM's 1 by 1). At ~70m or closer I fire all SRM's and LBX in one shot. Works for me :)

P.S. My ON1-K and ON1-V

I've been running my protector as a pocket Atlas and having great results with it. AC20, 2x A-SRM6 and 2x medium lasers all pushed along by a STD300 engine. It's durable, fast enough when speed tweaked and kicks out a surprising close range punch. Add an AC20 cooldown module and a medium laser range module and you've got a nice brawling mech for soaking damage and getting stuck in.

Really not having the kind of games I was expecting to have with this thing. I've run my other Orion's with XL engines and never had any trouble spreading some damage and making my armor count but right now its kinda painful. It's just going down so quick.

Mostly it just feels like I have no ability to actually control an engagement. Of course, then I get impatient and end up doing something stupid but it seems extra dangerous with this mech.

EDIT: Getting annoyed and had to mix things up. 3 LLas, LB10X. Can poke out with the lasers and once I'm in close boom, boom, boom! Much better for now while I get this thing elited.

Some of these previously dubbed "garbage" mechs are just downright scary now. I hate getting anywhere near DRG-1N, I try to get out ASAP. Same with a TDR-5SS or a Huginn... it's terrifying really. I'm glad the quirks are breathing new life into some mechs... BUT... I think some really need toned down a tad. Not all of them for sure. Some still barely make it but not worthless. Some of the quirks are just confusing as well and don't fit what people normally use on the chassis and or well... just don't fit my playstyle! Enjoy it! I feel the days of 1200+ dmg Thunderbolt matches are going to come to a close soon... and I'll surely miss it as well... but I will likely continue to play these mechs because as long as I'm doing some sort of damage to be competitive... I'll keep on playing them.

Some of the mech quirks looked OP on paper but turned out to be just about right, but I agree some are crazy OP. Been rolling dual AC5's on my BJ-1DC with an XL200 and 8 tons of ammo + CD mod. The AC5's shoot as fast as AC2's haha. A medium mech getting 800+ damage matches consistently IS a bit silly.

Have fun with these OP builds while they last.
