So, I am looking at an ON-1M for my first mech. How is this build?

As much as I wanted to like this mech as a fast-for-a-heavy alpha striker it never worked. Switching to a slower standard engine and trading the medium lasers for large lasers has helped alot. I can poke out at range, play a bit more defensively but still contribute and when I see an openning bam bam bam bam!

Some of these previously dubbed "garbage" mechs are just downright scary now. I hate getting anywhere near DRG-1N, I try to get out ASAP. Same with a TDR-5SS or a Huginn... it's terrifying really. I'm glad the quirks are breathing new life into some mechs... BUT... I think some really need toned down a tad. Not all of them for sure. Some still barely make it but not worthless. Some of the quirks are just confusing as well and don't fit what people normally use on the chassis and or well... just don't fit my playstyle! Enjoy it! I feel the days of 1200+ dmg Thunderbolt matches are going to come to a close soon... and I'll surely miss it as well... but I will likely continue to play these mechs because as long as I'm doing some sort of damage to be competitive... I'll keep on playing them.
Naw, they need to go in the other direction. Instead of nerfing equipment, they need to make it better. The answer isn't to dumb down a weapon. The solution is to improve ones skill. I am grateful for the quirks because lets face it. As a hero mech the Huggins was useless before the new quirks. Not it can be truly hailed as a "hero" mech. =]
As for the orion, I must agree with some of the others. It really was just a walking garbage scow. Now it actually has versatility. I'm glad to see PGI moving in this direction. It moves us away from COD style game play, and actuallly teaches a person to pilot well. Using terrain, equipment selection, team mechanics, etc...
In fact, I am dusting off my Orion's tonight! Thanks for the info gents. =]
Cheers!

Looks good, but I'd try to free 1,5 tons and put AMS. Do not underestimate this system.
I haven't used AMS since the advent of the module radar deprivation. The only time I run into trouble is when a UAV is activated for the enemy team. =]

I'm a big fan of Hunchbacks but I'm looking to add some heavies to my stable for CW. The Orions seem like a natural progression in that regard. Interested in the VA with the AC/20 quirks.
ON1=VA
You can't say that an AC20 backed up by an SRM16 isn't scary in close range.
