Not sure about that. Fun, but not all that effective.

Hyper Assault Gauss Rifles aren't super-sized LBX. In Tabletop they might use the same cluster hits table, but the actual description of the gun describes it as a "Rotary Gauss." Basically HAGs are supposed to be machine-gun Gauss. The LB-X Gauss role is already taken by the Silver Bullet Gauss Rifle, an Inner Sphere weapon.

Absolutely.
Although, depending on your BT campaign, they can be very useful. My TT unit's boss carries either 20 CMGs in 10 CMG arrays in each arm for dealing with close combat and infantry/vehicles or, if I know there are going to be no infantry/vehicles...I go with multiple HAG systems.
No question about it, they're relatively useless for the tonnage/space unless you're dealing with groundpounders but, if you put enough of them on a big, bad Assault mech, they can still rip into stuff. You just have to have the armor to dance around until it happens.

So, a DPS weapon....Hm...
Is that better or worse?

Depends on how PGI would handle it. The projectile speed would probably be around 2000 like a normal Gauss, which would help them be at least somewhat easy to aim (contrasted with slow projectile Clan UACs). They also have the potential for really high damage per volley (16 ton HAG40 doing 40 damage, for example).
The wild card here is the delay between each projectile. A fairly short projectile delay would let them be viable/good, but a long delay would make them horribad. Since they can have up to 40 total pellets, a very small delay between each pellet is essential. For reference, Clan LRMs have a delay of 0.05 seconds between each one...
HAGs would need to be roughly 0.04 or so. Don't want to go too short though, because holy crap 40 damage from a 16 ton ballistic. Maybe differentiate it per each HAG size (faster for the smaller HAGs?).

From this point on, though, pretty much all the "adaptations" of weapon systems are all IS. Snub-nosed PPCs, Rotary Assault Cannons, Angel ECM....those are all IS first. Some stuff gets copied and gains the benefit of less weight and better range from being built by the Clans, though.

It's a low heat MRM40 but can benefit from a Targeting Computer. The Clans copy it not long after the IS starts using it, I believe. Or, rather, both my Solaris Skunkwerks and Heavy Metal Pro give me the option to use them as Clan weapons depending on how I've got the timeline set. I'll admit, I've never seen a TRO that gives information on Clan versions, but there you have it.
Same thing with the RAC and the Angel system. There are a couple of others, but that's really about it. They never bother to copy the Light Gauss Rifle or any of that weird PPC crap, to the best of my knowledge. That being said, a CERPPC with a capacitor could be nasty.
The Heavy Gauss is BRUTAL....but is huge, heavy and uses the "split location" rules. On the upside, you don't see some moron in a Raven sporting one. Anything big enough to pack one should be relatively easy to either neutralize at range or to direct to where you want it to be with Thunders. The downside is that if you let it get close enough, there's not really a whole lot you can do about them. They don't give them to guys with Marksman badges...if you're seeing one, odds are fairly good the guy can use it.
