IMO it's the perfect balance of powerful/difficult to use without being totally OP once a player gets the mechanic down.

And double Gauss...
EDIT:
I only really have an objection against "double Gauss". That is nowhere near of being balanced.

You don't think that mechs that sacrifice the tonnage to use double gauss rifles should be deadly? They're the heaviest weapon for both IS and Clan.
I think the Clan version could use some sort of a nerf to make up for the fact that it's 3 tons lighter, but with clans generally dedicating more weight to engines it tends to balance out except on dire wolves.

To even consider a dual Gauss build you have to have an XL engine, and sacrifice most or all of your tonnage and critslots to it, which is a fair trade off for the pinpoint you get.

It's already low DPS for its weight, which is made up for because of its range, projectile speed, pin-point damage, and low heat. The charge mechanic just makes it fun, because you have to think, "I'm rounding this corner into a possible enemy position: when should I start charging?"

The fact that you can hit one single location for 30 points of damage at the range and projectile speed the Gauss Rifle has, is not right in terms of balance. It simply isn't.

.... BUT... I actually like that it exists in the game. It Does make the weapon feel unique and while I might not like it - there are probably people out there who feel the weapon does feel more natural. There is no reason that I have to enjoy using every weapon in the game, but it's probably a good thing for the game to include a variety of unique weapons.

cant take this thread seriously at all with another mention of "nerf clan" .... good lord our only pinpoint dmg weapon and you think it needs nerfing..... lol? btw clan erppc up to 15 dmg straight on with longer recycle and a bit more heat please and thanks.

Sorry you're so sensitive to the concept of game balance. I guess I shouldn't mention things like that because Clan Wolf doesn't fight well without better equipment.

But then to make only one gauss better they should slightly decrease charge up time, and increase charge hold time.

Something like this maybe:
Clan Gauss
Increase explosion chance up to 100%
IS Gauss
Increase health to somewhere around 7.25
Perhaps reduce explosion chance to somewhere around 75%?
Reduce explosion damage to 15?
The reason being that their lethality/combat power seems just about fine for the most part, for both factions.

I respectfully disagree. They are easy enough to use, but fun is not a way I would describe them. Personally I find the mechanic silly if not completely pointless. When used as a single weapon they generally feel completely out of place and inferior to most other weapons because of the mechanic, but they really shine when used as a pair.

I was thinking a slight charge-hold-time debuff on the CGauss, but your idea is probably better. It makes sense that the weapon that weighs more would be more durable.

I've been putting up 3-4 kill rounds with 700 damage in my single gauss stormcrow.

Alternatively, they could weigh more because they use crappy heavy components.

Think big and heavy vaccum tubes vs. tiny military-grade quantum-computing chips.

I disagree that the dire wolf needs changing. It absolutely is powerful , but:
1.) The clans actually only have a few viable mechs. Leave the ones that work alone. They aren't really much better than the best IS mechs.
2.) The dire wolf absolutely can lay down the firepower, but it also has notable limitations and demands an escort to remain effective against smaller, faster mechs that can flank it.
All that being said, I do also enjoy the charging mechanic for the gauss rifle. It makes it harder to use, but is oddly enough very entertaining to use. I DO wish it held the charge for just a second longer though.
