Korporal Stigsson was almost at the point of passing out when several vehicles loaded to the brim with MP's flew past him in what was most certainly a huge waste of manpower. Not that he cared much as his nights consisted of making sure that teenagers didn't sneak into the merc base to hitch a ride in the sim pods. Or worse, actually be dumb enough to try and get into a real BattleMech. So far the job had proved to be nothing but dull. At least the mercs made things somewhat interesting what with their interesting lifestyles. Stigsson did not hate mercs for any reason other than it's what everyone else was telling him to do. Now after spending the last few weeks around them, he found their company to be somewhat relaxing when compared to the rigid military life he now lived.
His newfound tolerance of mercs did not extend to one in particular though. A tall man that came with a rather lively bunch, he seemed to be the polar opposite to his smiling, rowdy colleagues. The mans demeanour just did not sit well with him at first. It wasn't until a few days had passed that the rumours started. It didn't take long before they were confirmed when the groups dropship was unloaded to reveal an almost intact Clan mech. While the techs had taken a shine to the Clanner and all the secrets he shared, the guardsman could hardly stop the scowl that crossed his face whenever the Clanner was near.
"Speak of the devil and he shall appear."
Stigsson watched as the Clanner moved to walk right by him when he intercepted the warrior.
"Your boss told me to not let you back in until either the sun came up or you didn't have a stick firmly lodged up your ass. And if I'm not mistaken it's still dark out and you are still walking a little to straight."
Truth be told, Nicholas was only half joking when he said that he wanted to break the little man before him. In reality the Clanner knew about the animosity that exuded from this man toward him. For the most part he did not care either. Recently however, this had turned into something of an annoyance as the guard made a point to be a Mckenna sized pain in the ass for him.
"Your point?"
"Well I wouldn't be doing my job if I let you in when ordered otherwise by a superior."
"You do not report to mercenaries and are under no obligation to do as they say."
"I know that. I just really like your CO."
Nicholas closed the distance with the smaller man and stared him square in the eyes.
"Let me make my position perfectly clear to you. My night has been far more interesting than I had intended. I am not in the mood for your games. I have done nothing to you except exist. I do not know you nor do you know me. You have some right to be a pr*ck based on my heritage and the invasion but that is where it stops. Now you will move out of my way or I will simply move you myself. Mind you, I do not want to do so, but I will."
Stigsson balked as the Clanner towered over him and quietly threatened him. He wasn't loud but given their distance from one another, he didn't need to be. He simply took a step to the side an allowed the Clanner to pass by without another word.
His way clear, Nicholas began moving to the small spaceport attached to the base that housed merc dropships. A closer inspection would reveal that most of the dropships that were there earlier that evening were now gone. In fact, only a
Leapord and a
Hrothgar were still on their pads. After a moment to make sure that the guardhouse could no longer see him, Nicholas approached the fence.
"
What better way to mask a break-in then to fake a break-in?"
Stigsson had only just settled back down from his encounter when his console lit up warning him that the motion sensors had picked up movement outside the spaceport fence. As he reached for his radio, he caught himself. With all the MP's out dealing with whatever BS they had been called out to deal with, that left only himself to deal with this. Taking a quick glance around to make sure that no one would see him leaving the gate, he spotted movement down an alley off the side of the street. He was about investigate that when a second alert warned him that the fence may have been breached. Completely forgetting the alley, the guard sprinted off toward that cause of the alarm. Not even noticing as he passed the Clan warrior hiding in the shadow of one of the
Hrothgar's legs.
Moving back to the gatehouse, Nicholas was greeted by a grinning Bill.
"Not bad, almost as good as me"
Once again letting a rare smile grace his features, Nicholas walked up to the group.
"I still say it would have been easier to break his neck..."
