I Googled "Time Warner Palo Alto peer slowdown" and found this very interesting blog post: http://www.cringely....14/05/06/14890/ . If this is true, then the slowdowns are being caused by good old fashioned greed. No wonder there are so many VPN services popping up for gamers, they are the ones who will cash in on the ISP / Peer standoff. This all stinks to high hell. When I have more time, I would like to do some research and find out how many of the VPN services are owned by these peer network companies.

I figured it was a peering feud. What I don't understand is how MWO/Timewarner customers from Socal, Texas, or otherwise are having the same problem. It must be QoS policy throughout a giant network. Hell maybe its a Time Warner QoS policy which is meant to sabotage a competitors product but is erroneously going after MWO packets.

It might just be a telia policy, and TWC has to push and prod them on it if they're willing to spend the time.

TWC may be more inclined to negotiate with them, if they started losing customers because of this standoff. Unfortunately, like I have said earlier, TWC is the only broadband provider available in many areas; this is why monopolies are bad for customers.

I just read that article and to be honest, as a UK based player, I'm stunned...

The USA is supposed to be at the bleeding edge of tech and the largest, most dynamic economy in the world.. and yet the UK has a superior internet policy and structure. We're all on Fibre-Optic over here! I've been complaining about the Lag and all the cr@p I've been experiencing for ages. Now I know why.. as my ISP tells me, it really is North American (area) servers and rubbish internet system.

What's the international number for your President's office?

'Sigh...'

LOL, you underestimate the greed of American megacorps.

Sometimes I really think we need to enact term limits for all members of the congressional government to keep elected officials from from falling into megacorps pockets. If they do, they'll only be around for a bit, and then the companies have to piss away more money to try and snag someone else.

All I can say is this is the ONLY game where my latency hits 500ms+ every night. The ONLY...so the math is pretty simple as to who is not at fault in my book.

It is not that simple, most of the games you play are not located where the MWO servers are and if you live in the US and are on Time Warner, you will be routed through peer networks who will throttle you as a protest because they want more money from Time Warner. Do a tracert to www.MWO.com and look at the hops that are significantly higher than the others, you will see that they are the peer networks in question. PGI has little control over how your data gets routed to and from their servers.

Well, it's even possible that the traffic is just "unidentified" and its on some non-standard port ranges. Unidentified + odd port ranges COULD be treated as "other" for their prioritization - it might even be bundled with low priority like filesharing, etc. The question would be, how do we get them to prioritize those ports. I've tried talking to support about it, they didn't seem overly invested in trying to help.

The way i'm looking at it is, TW's peers are overloaded in the evening and one of those peers is refusing to upgrade their network to handle peek traffic. Hence, instead of playing as usual we are wondering wtf is going on.

I haven't had a chance to pop into comms and talk vpn with you, but I have documented what works and what doesn't. Have you tried pingzapper at all? Just wondering :P

There's a free one called "battleping" but I haven't determined if its really working or not, due to the intermittent nature of the issue.

I can't wait for Google fiber.

I'm in Google Fiber's "sign-ups open soon" zone on their Austin map. However, considering that one of the neighborhoods with open sign-ups has the sign-ups going until mid-July, it will be a while before that's an option.

In the US, 100 years is a long time. In the UK, 100 miles is a long ways.

I once drove from Seattle to Los Angeles. Some UK friends of mine asked how far that was, and I replied that it was like driving from London to Naples, Italy. They didn't believe me, but it's true. The sheer size of the United States is beyond the comprehension of most people who live in Europe.

It's almost a miracle that we have internet at all in the US, given its size. We'll have nationwide fiber some day, but it's expensive and very time consuming to lay that much fiber cable.

Yeah, I've observed the same. Talked to a buddy from Norway and it was the same thing. He finally visited a few months ago and it blew his mind how far stuff was. He used to hassle me about wife and I owning 2 cars, etc. It's hard to help them understand that driving to work was 70 miles each way lol - there ARENT any trains, bro!

Yeah, I drive 50 miles each way to my work, through mind-numbing traffic.

Only thing i tried was WTFast but it didn't work...

I heard about goldenfrog being good. They have the option to disable encryption making the ping impact not as severe. I think they also have a free trial.

Yeah I really want WTFast to work but it disconnects when it goes from TCP(lab) to UDP(drop)

Pingzapper's been the best for me, its free an hour at a time.

Pingzapper is only $30/year too.
