Yes, dropships will attack enemies.

Yesterday my team was losing badly by the end and the enemy finally poured out of the base to finnish us off, I was in a Spider 5D and by staying in the fringes of the battle I managed to sneak past them and into the enemy base while they were busy with larger and meaner threats, I didn't think I'd have time to blow up the gauss turret but I was hoping to at least give them the scare of their lives, instead two enemy dropship decided to drop just as I was geting into firing position and I was cut in half ... so much for my sneaking.... lol.
The defender has an already strong position I doubt very much that having the defending dropships fire is a good idea at all with all those turrets and magnificent defensive positions the defending team already has, at one point yesterday a dropship fired at me while I was outside a gate firing at the generator... come on.

Dropships should not be involved in the mech fighting.
It favors the defenders who likely never get within laser range of the attacker dropships. Yet the defenders are almost forced to rush the same region as the defender dropships stop and go.
The defenders already have gates, upgraded turrets, and don't really have to chase anyone around. If my dropship doesn't get to enter combat, neither should the defenders.

Dropships fight nearby Enemies but at Boreal you can camp the attacker Dropside very well with Clan ER ML and longer range Weapons.

One possible solution and I will probably get flamed for this, is to attacker dropships strafe the defense lines so both sides have to brave dropship laser fire equally.
