How To Drop As A Premade Group

On multiple occasions our small 3 man group was broken with some members entering a drop and others getting left behind. Are the normal drop groups even used in CW or must every member enter a planets queue on their own?
Could someone clarify this please?

So when a unit group is made, does only the group leader need to select a planet or all the members still have to do it individually?
@Bigbacon
Does that mean that an odd-numbered unit group might still be broken up?

Only the group leader does, and an odd numbered group won't be broken up, it just might be hard to find the right number of fillers for it.

12 gets auto drop as they fill the team entirely
4 and 8 are easy to match together for a total 12
solo queue seems a hazard in terms of waiting time

Do you know if there is a difference in wait times for solo vs 2 vs 3?

You cannot drop 'grouped' with friends in CW, unless you are specifically part of a pre-established unit?
What, then, was Russ talking about (during the last Town Hall iirc) when he said players in units would not be able to group with players outside of their unit?

It means exactly what he said. Unit groups can only invite unit members to drop in CW.
Though he said they're looking at opening that restriction, possibly.

Is there a grouping method that does not require being a member of a unit for CW?
Or are there only the two choices of Solo dropping, or joining a unit and dropping with them exclusively?

At the moment you have the option of:
1) Dropping in a unit group with other members OF YOUR UNIT.
2) Sync-dropping as a solo player at the same time and location as your friend in ANOTHER unit.
My group had already hit the queue when I logged on last night. I quickly asked where and hit defend on the same planet. It threw us into the same match.
Russ said that they're looking into allowing non-unit members to form up groups for CW if they belong to the same faction. We'll see when/if that happens.
Hope it helps!

Thank you very much. That was exactly what I was trying to get clarified.
