I was going to knock something up on PC part picker but they have the great gaming build which is very similar to what I would have picked and bang on $1k USD.

You could bump the SSD up to 256GB for about $30, just filter by best price to GB and get the first one at your price point or size required.

For the CPU heatsink it's fine but I'd go for the Noctua equivalent myself.

For the GPU, unless you're going to push it the cheapest GTX970 that uses a non standard cooler will do fine. The standard single blower fan design is noisy when it tries to move any relevant amount of air. Alternatively wait for the GTX960 to come out, it will probably be the best bang for buck card when it comes out but the rumors are that release has been pushed back to Q1 2015.


My rig is a 4670k, GTX 970, 8GB of ram. So very similar to the PCPP great gaming build with some different brands and older CPU and Motherboard. MWO runs great with the settings cranked up (havn't noticed the FPS drop in CW that people are talking about), and that's on 1200p rather than 1080p.

Sorry I'm not the spoon feeding type... somebody that can't bother to Google what a decent memory or PSU is deserves a Dell ;p

Don't buy a laptop, dollar for dollar it will be your worst investment for a gaming machine. You can't build one yourself as easy as building a desktop. Pick the components you want. A $1,250 machine will normally last you 5 years as long as you researched the components first and a $1,000 machine will be good for 3 years of gaming and a $500 or less machine will be a low to medium setting machine for a few years and by year 5 a very nice doorstop.

$900 gaming rig:

16 GB ram Crucial DDR3 1600 $130

You will be able to play MWO very well with this and have a system that will last you 5 years. All the components are solid. The video card will need to be updated in 2 years. So its your choice if you want to spend more now. I had the 760 in a similar set up and it crushed MWO. It won't run AAA games in Ultra or High but can do Medium in most games.

Do NOT buy anything less than a quadcore. Game companies are starting to support it and its becoming main line.

You could buy a 500GB SSD for $250 now and have extremely good performance as well.

The R9 290 is your best graphics bet for the buck by far. It is 4k ready, Oculus ready (it actually has 2 GPU's that help this) and will be a great card for a very long time to come.

Pricing for the 290s has quickly dropped after the bitcoin gold rush too..

X99 for gaming is just a waste...

I would X99 or even i7 only if you do content creation on the side or need your rig to double duty for work data mining...
