We defend Idlewind 5 times and the others defended it 4 to get it down to zero. So we had the most importance and we get the planet.

Really TM?
Anyway, I'm curious about this as well. We took a planet Anywhere and had 2 defenses listed for it. Another group appears to have gotten a third defense for it and out of these 2 days it would appear that it went to the person who got it on the last day.
I know there's conjecture but this is a feature that really deserves to be explained.

TheMagician from,SJR had a convo with Karl Berg of PGI that mentioned this. For example, we scored one third more points from the assault on Turtle Bay over SJR, hence we were credited with the occupation.
We defended Idlewind one night to claim that one but later during the assault on Almunge, we elected not to defend Idlewind at all as it was in little danger. BSM stepped in to provide the defenses so now they claim ownership of the planet.

I also sent a ticket in to support to ask the very same question, no answer yet.
The most popular answer is
The unit that holds the most victories at ceasefire time will get their name on the planet.
Seems reasonable.
What we dont know is how many OTHER units are fighting and winning on the same planet that "we" are. My unit spent 5 to 6 hours fighting on 1 plant over the weekend, gathering the 11 tokens plus only to find on the Next day another unit got their name on it... So, ...??

Wait...so what happens when smaller groups end up carrying hard on a planet?

I spent time going over the CW updates and some of the dev logs and still had a difficult time finding information. I believe there was a post from one of the Devs that speaks to this a bit more but can't seem to find it.
Frustrating.

These days, all the cold hard data comes from Russ' Twitter. Seriously. Ask him there, you may get your answer.

When there are no cold hard facts to use..... I want to think it's LP because its an easily quantifiable number that is awarded for more than just # of wins/defenses/successes....

Unless they changed it, but I've never seen anything contradicting that.

They usually get credited.
I think it can also happen on an existing defense of a planet though... so it's not limited to solely attacking.
Most defenses don't require a full commitment, so it is in the smaller unit's best interest to put their name on it... although there's no other benefit outside of recognition.
It's easier just to help the main forces out to attack others.
