Introducing The 64-Bit Mwo Client!

Greetings MechWarriors,

We are very happy to announce the experimental release of the 64-bit MechWarrior Online client tomorrow, included with Thursday's patch!

The most important result of this change will be that any users running the 64-bit MWO client will now be able to utilize all of the available RAM in their system.
You can use the automated version detection tool found here to determine if you are running the 32 or 64-bit version of Windows.
Please note that the 64-bit client is not usable under 32-bit operating systems.
64-bit users running low-spec machines may experience performance issues if attempting to run the 64-bit client. We recommend that those users stick with the 32-bit client if they experience any issues.

To switch your client over to 64-bit, follow these steps:

  1. Just in case, make sure you run both the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer and the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redisitributable Package before trying to run the 64-bit MWO client.
  2. Once you have either run those packages or are sure that the required DirectX and Visual C++ packages are already installed, launch the MechWarrior Client and click the gear icon in the top right of the Launcher window.
  3. In the dropdown, select "Use 64-bit game client (if supported by Operating System)".
  4. Play!

Brilliant. This should help squeeze a little more performance out of the engine. I guess I never realized it was only running as a 32-bit application. Either way, thanks!

The text has since been adjusted a little from the original wording, but we want to stress that this is currently an experimental implementation of the 64-bit client.

Your house/apartment/dwelling probably won't explode, but there might be some issues with the client here and there.

Will this fix the issue where MW:O will never use more than 2GB of VRAM, or is that still an outstanding issue, either with the game client or CryEngine itself? At 2560x1440 in DX11 many maps use more than enough resources to pass that cap and you get weird artifacting.

Ok, well nevermind. Hadn't checked in awhile and it looks like that's already fixed, at least on the CW maps.

Man, I hope my PC can handle it... i've got an old Q6600 that i'm probably going to have to overclock, paired with a brand spanking GTX970. It's like having a Ferrari with pushbike wheels.

Oh well, FOR SCIENCE.

In theory, if you have a 64 bit CPU and OS, it should run with at the very least no issues, and at best, use memory better and eventually be more stable.

Or it could blow up your house not.

Chances are a 64-bit version will consume more memory than normal... still, you get more out of your CPU for that.
