I am not new but am new to CW. How do you get a match? I select planet and hit ATTACK OR DEFEND and then it just sits there counting with a timer counting up. Any tricks to getting in?

If it's sitting there with a timer, you're doing it right.
It has to wait until it collects a full team of 12, and then it has to wait again for the opposition. Wait a bit longer, and it wouldn't hurt to look for a group to play with, or a faction-oriented forum with info on, for example, what targets Ghost Bear groups are going after.

Right now it's in beta, so there are a lot of wrinkles to be ironed out. One the bugs is not being able to see who is on your team right away. I think because of this, a lot of people are waiting for a bit and then cancelling. For right now, if I want to play CW, I ready up and then find something else to do while I wait. It has taken up to 30 minutes to find a match. I hope and believe that the wait times will get better as more people are aware of the issue and are willing to wait in limbo for a match.

Tips that have worked for me:
1. At 5 minutes check a different planet
2. Stick to Clan vs. IS planets
3. Find planets that are partially conquered
4. Once you get in a drop, you can usually stick with that planet and have an improved chance of getting a match
