So, the user Redshift2k5 came out of nowhere with this picture:

It's a Highlander, clearly. And it's supposedly from the still unreleased October's PC Magazine.

OMG

The art is amazing. I mean, Alex Iglesias pushed to the next level with this one.

But, is it the #16 mech?

Yes, it is an Assault (what we are all hoping for). An yes, it's a jumping Assault. But...

(...) what about the variants?

We have only:

HGN-732 - 2x Medium Lasers, 1x SRM-6, 1x LRM-20, 1x Gauss Rifle
HGN-732b - 3x Medium Lasers, 1x SRM-6, 1x LRM-20, 1x Gauss Rifle
HGN-733: 2x Medium Lasers, 1x SRM-6, 1x LRM-20, 1x Autocannon 10

Not much of a variety... :(

And wasn't the Highlander extinct until the resume of production in 3057?

Well, I guess with that looks, the Highlander is welcome anywhere...

Based on the Devs' past policy of announcing everything via twitter/facebook/Gaming magazines/third party websites before/instead of the actual MWO forums, I would expect this is the official 16th mech announcement.

You know, if any of the devs have browsed this forum today and seen this then we MIGHT get the Highlander announced tomorrow. Wishful thinking I know but I had to say it.

The Highlander isn't a bad 'Mech, but I - like Odanan - am wondering how they'll get around the lack-of-variants issue (unless the Devs intend to throw extinct and/or post-3057 variants at us). :(

Personally, I would have much preferred the Marauder II (even one modeled on the Reseen/PP version), and would have been a bit more impressed with the Victor (jump-capable), Hatamoto-Chi (which has a jump-capable variant), Charger (which has a jump-capable variant), Zeus, or even the Banshee or Cyclops. :(

733, 733C, and 733P... They can change up the hard points and stuff... Still this is not but speculation at this point.

Yea nice. The second thread you're poisoning with this out of context picture of the Highlander suposedly derived from a not yet released issue of PC Gamer if even this is true.
Again the Devs are sticking heavily to canon so far.
Releasing the Highlander would be a 180° turn from this course since its vanquished for about 200 years at this time.
The only army it is fielding isn't even unveiled.
ComStars ComGuards make their existence open fact shortly before the Battle of Tukayid. Until then there are only a hand full of Highlanders in the whole inner sphere outside of museums.
And even than the first variants of the Highlander are showing up around the VedCom civil war around 3061 or so. We have still 3049.
There are only few possible Mechs. Either they are waiting for the Clans to appear and the next Mech is a Clan Omni Mech ( not second line like Stone Rhino or Kodiac ) or it will be one from TRO 3025 or maybe one from TRO 3050 that was produced in the mean time.

They just announced the Flea as Battlemech 16. However I still believe we will get the Highlander via October 10th announcement. here's my breakdown:

Don't loose hope!

For what ever reason they have divorced their former pattern completely. I don't think this was the original 16, but who knows. I doubt now my earlier prediction that the next 16 will be clan mechs, however, who knows at this point.

5 lights, 4 mediums, 4 heavies, and 3 assaults. This is where we stand. At this point I do not care to guess at mech 17, nor will I be surprised by whatever it is. I am sure whatever it is, I will be glad to have it in the game.

Yay Flea!

I agree the Highlander is not a good choice at all. But you can't ignore that image - it is clearly by Alex Iglesias for MWO.
I don't know if it will show in the game any time soon (and I hope not) but who knows?

The good thing about this Flea is: we can hope for at least 1 more Medium, 1 more Heavy and 2 more Assaults.

The Medium I suppose will be the Blackjack. It's like a Medium Jaggermech, but with many, many interesting variants. And it has jump jets.

The Heavy could be the Grasshopper or the Orion. I hope for the Orion (which could look amazing - for the first time - with the art of Alex Iglesias) but it has a similar role as the Cataphract and it's not all variant friendly. The Grasshopper doesn't have much variety too, but it's a classic and can jump (something lacking in the Heavy category).

For the Assault I still bet on the Victor. And I would like an Assault in the 90, 95 tons niche, but:
  • The Cyclops, which has many variants, is as extinct as the Highlander.
  • The Mauler would be amazing as a ballistics boat but has no variety at all.
  • And the Banshee has an awful, useless, primary variant.

Add the Fafnir and Mad Cat MK.2 ... and for me, MWO will be almost complete ;)
