All the info in the world is fine unless you don't know how to use it effectively. I belong to a group called the Warpigs Mercenary Company. We are a group of people who play primarily for fun. We arn't a comp team so there is no pepe measuring going on, we just have a good time and if we happen to tickle the leg of a teammate with a small laser, well that just means hello. Stop by anytime and drop with us, we are in the ngng TS about a third of the way down. We can help you with loadouts or tactics or what not to do as we have a number of skilled pilots who can train you well. If i'm not there tell them i sent you. You don't even have to join the group if you don't want to. If nothing else you will have a good time with some friendly banter and Mech Warrior won't seem so intimidating.

Another 'welcome' and a highlight of some great points already made that were very helpful, and still are to me:
1. Stay with the team until you develop skills and a mech that allows you to tackle a role outside the main group.
2. Be patient. Use Cover. Repeat.
3. Run as many chassis as you can to see what feels good and go with it. 99% of the time I'm in the one chassis I love, I play others to spice it up a bit.
Be respectful, have fun and kill something.

If you have a little MC, hold on to it and when there are sales on mech bays (often there is one around christmas) you can pick up a couple. Before you've filled your four slots there isn't any rush to get any more but if the opportunity presents itself go for it. You can't have too many mech bays.

Thanks again for all the help. Sorry for the late response but I was a bit distracted with the holidays. I'm definitely noticing quite a few repeated bits of advice that I will definitely take to heart. I admit my time playing games like Insurgency was definitely governing my gameplay, and while I was being cautious I was playing more like I was on a mission and less like part of a lance. I will definitely start hanging with my teammates more, and I have certainly noticed that many of my deaths came from groups and I rarely encountered just 1 enemy, so that should have been the first hint.
Oh well, at least I am having fun even if I'm not incredibly successful. Of course, I'd probably have even more fun if I started seeing more success. Hopefully that will happen, and I appreciate the pointers. I think the real trick will be to find the mechs that really work with how I prefer to play. Nova is great, and my best game came in that so far, but I'm not ready to write the others off yet. I'll have to play around with what's out there and see what really works.

Ah, no problem of course!
Yeah, do play through each and every trial. Maybe you might be a legendary light pilot! Maybe you might have a very zombielike sense of survival on assaults! Maybe you have the best sniping skills possible! Only you can see which role you might fit.
Do stick with your teammates. If they come in groups, also come in groups yourself! There is no fun in fighting 2+ people by yourself (which even myself might find outnumbering!)
And of course, merry christmas to all!

I am still the worst Mech Pilot in the Community and Ive been in every Closed Beta since MW2:GBL. I have a feeling of accomplishment when I have a end game score above 100. But I am a firm believer in Quantity over Quality, so what if I get shot to shreds over and over if I have 100 drops to everyone elses 10, it all works out in the end. But boy howdy it sure does upset some of my teammates, usually those I am in a PUG with. When it comes to Unit fights I do tend to survive and be an effective member of the team by either becoming the Focus of more than 3 pilots who my Unit mates pick off or by performing the duties given to me by the Drop Coordinator.
Ok nuff babble from me back to the Holiday Event, good luck and have fun! (Nothing else really matters but that you have fun, when you arent having fun its time to move on.)
