Welcome back :) Glad you were able to take the advice offered and turn your matches around :)

When you complete your first 25 matches you won't have a posting restriction anymore.

Hi there.

Some good advices already. Just wanted to add one more thing: Torso twisting.

It's a common term used around here to denote a "technique" to spread incoming damage around the different Hitboxes (or components) of your torso. This will gain your mech some longevity. It's done by twisting away your torso, hence the term, from enemy fire when you're not shooting yourself.
When you're walking a straight line, and always facing the foe, it's far more simple for them to hit you in a specific location (e.g. center torso with the engine) again and again, and your mech is melted in no time. So shoot them, and then try to turn away your torso to one side when they fire back, turn back and shoot again, and then turn again away (possibly to the other side to present them "fresh" armor) etc. Depending on the mech you're piloting, also the arms will soak up some damage.
And don't forget your legs, move them, too, to really "twist" around the battlefield.

Some people say twisting is already a bit of an "advanced" technique. While I do agree, that it needs quite a bit of practice till this movement becomes fluent in the heat of a battle, I for myself think, the sooner one tries to incoorporate twisting in one's piloting, the more it pays off in the long run. Give it try ;)

So keep it up and have fun!

Btw. just for variety from all those TimberWolfs:
My favored mech in TT was (is) the Grasshopper.

Ah yes, welcome.

Do take the trouble to look at your heat meter, its not like you have to stare down your target all the time.

Dont forget, the next "level" in enjoying the game (if you want) is to join a unit and drop with voice coms. After that it would be 12 player group drops followed by organised private matches.
The currently final hurdle to cross would be Community Warfare which is a respawn game mode. Please note however, that this is a difficult game mode for veteran MWO players, so Id suggest not playing this until you are 100% happy with your playstyle within the teams you are playing with in your matches. For CW you have to set up a dropdeck of 4 mechs within certain total weight limits giving each team a total of up to 48 mechs they can/must use (depending on how long the match lasts). this also means you have to be much more tactical and work together as a team much better to be able to pull off a succesful match (also taking into account who drops when with what mech).

Buy three thunderbolts(7S, 7SE, 7SS) , thank me later.

All here will cost you as much as a single timberwolf and are both deadly and tanky.

I can confirm HARDKOR's sentiment, although he has the numbers wrong on those TDR variants. I had a plan to get my Thunderbolts since before the quirks were released, and the recently released quirks make them formidable. My personal favorite is the TDR-9SE, but that's mainly because it has jumpjets. That tonnage can be put to far better use on the TDR-5SS; with 7 Medium Pulse Lasers, it's nothing but deadly.

On the other hand, the Timber Wolf is not a bad choice. Just keep in mind that it's weapons necessarily dictate that you keep your 'Mech facing your enemy more often(longer burn times on Clan lasers, multiple projectiles for Clan ACs). Of course, none of that matters when you can face your enemy's back, and the Timber Wolf's speed means it's better at getting that kind of angle than other[IS] heavies.

And they are much cheaper overall. Mostly people are focused on 9S (ER PPC) and 5SS (wubwubwub MPL). Some like the JJ 9SE with it's LPL but it's a bit more niche overall.

OP if you like the Timberwolf, remember that staying with all omnipods you get a set amount of XP bonus, and the only omnipod you can't switch is the CT. The Prime has an extra MG hardpoint, the C has a zombielike laser hardpoint (which explains why everyone loves the C), and the S has a hardwired JJ hardpoint. Overall they are gonna suck to grind for em but they are gonna be awesome and glad you finished up Cadet Bonus! :)

Sorry bout the numbering confusion. its a 9 not a 7. However, the t-bolt is definitely the best use of your initial funds as it's one of the only mechs where you are going to enjoy piloting all three of the variants you need for mastery. The firestarters are also a good choice for a first mech(and there's a master pack if you want to spend dollars and there isn't one for tbolts) but those are easy to buy later and using your inital funds to get into heavies is probably a better choice.

Hi 1984.

I like to respond to posts like this.

This is one of the more difficult games to play well, and its not uncommon to have a rash of bad games in a row, for days on end at times.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, but I have said it before and I'll say it again, it takes hundreds of rounds to become medicore, and a thousand to become merely good at this game.

If you are not having any fun, even during the bad rounds, then maybe its not for you.

You really need to take your lumps early in MWO. At least today you have (C) trial mechs that are worth a dam. I started whe the trial mechs were stock build Innersphere builds with single heat sinks, they were royal TRASH.

There is no magic fix for you. Get better at situational awareness, and what you can and cant do in the mech of your choice. Timing is the key.

Good luck.

Thank you for the tips so far.

I got involved tonight and made 8,5m c bills.

I followed the advice of staying with the team and fighting as a unit and one match i took down 3 mechs, and survived the match :D

I'm starting to get the hang of it now and it's actually been enjoyable tonight. I think my biggest stumbling block initially was that unlike other games once your dead, you're dead. there is no respawn so you need to think what you're doing.

I'm going to carry on playing and see how it goes. I play the timberwolf as it's been my favourite since I was a kid so i'll probably buy one once I have the Cbills. I'm using the trial timberwolf and doing ok

I have one more post left tonight, so I'll have to respond tomorrow once I've run out of posts. Thank you to all of you for answering me and well not dismissing me out of hand. I think this has potential even if the initial learning curve is somewhat stupid hard.

Next up UK clan :D

The learning "curve" for this game is the west side of mount Thor.

Here's an illustration:

Also, I need to re-iterate: You can play this game forever, and get to pilot every mech in the game, without spending a single pound on it.

If you ever want a sparring partner, I'd be happy to help.

FYI, we don't have a learning curve here. We have a learning Cliff of Insanity.

Did you bring your giant? ;)

Disarm your enemy by turning off chat. Really, there's nothing there worth anything. Most times even in your team chat it's just trolling. Advice they give is often wrong, tactics bad.

Till you buy your first mech and customize it, all mechs suck, but will give you the idea of what ones you like to play. Light mechs are the most 'action packed' but don't expect to 'fight fair'. You will die. And expect to die every match without kiling anything. Play conquest and go cap points a lot till you know the maps and get a feel for the place. This ain't your standard FPS or like every other MW game before.

Action is subjective, but this game is slow, and realistic in it's absolute need for teamwork for success. Join a unit of your choice, get teamspeak and you will thrive quicker.

There is currently nothing other than mech bays worth buying in this game. Save your real money till you either want to blow money on a luxury item, or need the mech bays. Everything else is vanity and waste.

I just discovered that the stock builds for the Thunderbolts -9S and -9SE both come stock with Double Heatsinks, and they don't appear to have a comparable price increase(i.e. they're not 1.5 million CBills more than the other two Thunderbolts). This means you can spend that same amount of money, for example, on the -9S and have it fully ERPPC meta compatible(minus modules). You can do the same thing right now with the -9SE even cheaper, buying only one Large Pulse Laser. Earning the Endo-steel upgrade allows you to install 3 more heat sinks, and make good even better.

That's probably one of the cheapest, most capable 'Mechs in the game right now, all things considered. You do still have to buy one of the variants with single heat sinks, so in reality, those two variants are the more expensive ones.

Also, I can disagree slightly with Kjudoon about there being nothing other than 'Mech bays worth spending MC on in this game. If you're budget limited, or very frugally minded(like me), that's very close to being true. I'd say the Hero 'Mechs are worth spending real money on though. They have a permanent 30% CBill earnings bonus, which is far and away a better deal than premium time, simply because it doesn't expire(and it also works in tandem with free premium time to grant a total of +80% CBill bonus earnings). Consider that if you bought a regular triple-A blockbuster title on a console, you'd end up spending $60 for the game. Buy the $50 MC package here, and if it's on sale, you'll end up with a tidy 14,400 MC. Also, if you suspect your first time buying MC will not be your last, you can save your future self some money by purchasing one of the larger MC packages.

I did the math, and the $50 package is at a sweet spot for cost efficiency improvements as you move up the packages. $49.95 gets you 12,000 MC(240.24 per $). Since the $29.95 package gets you 6500, or 217 MC per $, the improvement by moving to the $50 package is over 23 points more cost efficient than the next cheaper package. The next larger package on the other hand, at $99.95 for 25,000, gets you 250.13 per $, a less than 10 point improvement in cost efficiency. Even better, the additional expenditure is a smaller increase for the $50 package, than for the $100 package. There's a handy chart someone built too, if you're curious to know what things are costing you in-game later, after you've already purchased your MC: http://homepage.usas...SDPriceList.pdf

Edit: The origianal thread where that chart is linked is here, and also includes a smaller chart with MC package price comparisons: http://mwomercs.com/...132-price-list/

https://www.paypal-g...us/giftcardlist

Even though the Karma Koin/Paypal/MWO is over with (to get additional in-game MWO stuff, I received an email to get $10 off a $50 gift card purchase. It is good for one gift card purchase only. If you have a paypal account, before you pull the trigger it will show the $10 discount. I tried to purchase 2 gift cards but only the first purchase showed the discount.
