So, i decided unlike in the past not to spend GXP to Level my Bonus Mechs i had not played yet and found that leveling the Skilltree of Mechs is a horrible expereince.

An umnastered Mech is clumsy, hot, slow, at a severe disadavantage against mastered Mechs and at all no fun to play - especially unmastered Medium Mechs play like ****.
Assaults at least have some Firepower and Armor and you can get something out of them even unmastered, i guess most Heavys do somewhat well also but a Medium Mech that has to ride on the Very Edge of the Performance Limit to be able to do any useful on the Battlefield simply sucks hellish.

I can only imagine how new Players feel when their unmastered or Trial Mechs face mastered Vets that seem to be invincible and thrice as Powerful and how it drives new Players away from the game.

MWO needs to get rid of Skills that offer ~20%, ~30% and even ~50% Advantages.

Change all Skills to top out at ~10% and no double efficiencies would help or a whole new solution to the whole Mechskill-System.

Really, atm leveling a Mech simply is very unfun!

Leveling for me is fun, when I enjoy the mech I'm piloting. Leveling that horrible third variant sucks though.

Yeah, grinding blows...always. Im always very glad when its over and never look forward ot having to do it again. Kinda why in CW the only mech I use and have elite is my WHKB....

Grinding the Vindicator has probably been one of the single worst experiences I've had so far in this game.

But I'm not going to award PGI with my money for pissing me off.

The freemium model depends on creating frustration in order to boost revenues. I would not expect this to change.

All I notice is that my favorite mechs are all sitting mastered with 100,000 to 250,000 XP on them. I have always felt that the final tier for XP should earn you a custom hardpoint of your choosing on the mech in the location you wish, maybe 1 million XP.

I've been called masochistic or something along those lines 'cause I actually enjoy the grind. I enjoy it even more now that I found using Trial 'Mechs works toward building up your 'mech xp of 'mechs you don't currently own yet.

I don't know though.. I guess I just focus on other things like:

Effective ways to dismember the opponent.
Strategies involving playing peekaboo.
Hitting targets with LRMs without a lockon (which I managed to do during a Defend Invasion Sortie today)
Hitting targets that are outside my radar range using regular zoom.
Working on different weapon types/groups to help fine tune my effectiveness in the field.
Figuring out if I want cooldown modules or range modules for my 'mechs and if I want to bother with buying multiples or just get one of each and add/remove them when they're needed/not needed.

Understandably if anyone focuses on just trying to earn 'Mech XP (or even GXP for that matter) then yes.. you're going to depress and stress yourself 'cause of "not getting enough XP per battle." Kind of like looking at the clock waiting for the end of the School/Work Day to come around. The more you focus on the clock without distractions the slower time seems to drag on.

Chances are you "play" the game and the grind is what happens along the way... (I play the same way).

Folks who launch a match with the pure unadulterated premise of "grinding" like it's a second job will, like the OP find it oppressive and begrudge the whole experience...

What makes it worse is when the other variants just flat out suck or are so similar to one you like its same but less effective build you use on the variant you like. The catapult variants have this in spades missile boat, missile boat, missile boat, ballistic/laser build.

Lol, I enjoyed leveling my Wolverines(was still painful), the Thunderbolts on the other hand... That was horrible. Those mechs suck hard until you get elites. It probably comes down to personel prefrence, because so far in my experience mediums are much more enjoyable to play and level then just about anything else. Or you might be playing in terrible mediums. (all my mediums have 40+ damage, with some insane quirks. More firepower than most heavies)

given how all mechs have to be leveled, no matter how the were purchased(c-bills, MC, etc..) how exactly does your comment make any sense at all?

Grinding for Clan mechs is the worst. Not only they are incredibly expensive, I can't sell their XL engine to make some buck back. :(

Even though the Dakka Whale is the best thing I had experienced so far in game, I wonder if the 60+ million C-Bills I grinded to get them + the time spent to master them was worth it...

Or they could just offer more mech masteries, more tiers more things for xp to be spent on...when you get the garage you want setup how you like you don't have much use for xp. Cbills...grrrr

1. It sells premium time for extra XP (as well as c-bills).
2. It encourages conversion of XP from mastered mechs that you like playing towards mechs that you are just starting to setup.

The combination of premium time and XP->GXP conversions makes the grind a lot easier.

I forgot to mention:

3. Using mastered champions with premium to grind more GXP in general for pilot/mech trees as well as avoiding playing particular variants you might hate.

I don't buy into heavies are okay un elited (mastering really isn't a big deal ) My 2 heavies were having a hard time until they were mastered. Now assaults mediums and other heavies fear to see my gun ports facing them. I will admit even mastered tend to have a hard time dealing with lights in a heavie. But anything else 1 on 1 i'm not afraid. A lights killable just more of a threat. But yeah they gotta be elited regardless of class.

I find the difference between a double basic'd mech and a fresh (no skills unlocked) counterpart to be much too significant. I like having something to work toward, but don't like how double basics can totally make or break a build.
