Heck let them swarm the enemy mech complete with an animation of a clan elemental trying to break into your cockpit obscuring your view and people shooting you int he head with FF trying to get the thing off of you.

Right now I think light zerg is in a good place... it's a tool that can be used, and it'll whomp an unsuspecting defending team, but most people know to look for it now so it's not a big deal because it can be beaten.
The only problem is that having the turrets be as powerful as they are makes conventional fighting a bit of a pain. I think that the best way to alleviate that is to make the turrets always be out of their shield. RIght now, they pop up and fire when you're within 450... meaning that if you can shoot it from 1200m, too bad. You're doing 10% damage.
Make the turrets always-up, and that lets a team sneak an RVN-3L into the base and clear turrets for a while without having to trigger the return fire mechanism, while the bulk of the force fights it out somewhere else.

Elemental swarms would be fantastic but the engine isn't built for them.
Anyways, would the turrets be more or less overpowered as PPC turrets? Though they'd deal more to heavy mechs and less to light mechs that way so it probably would not solve anything.
