It has been a year of not playing this game and now I'm back but, it's taking weeks for me to finish update, Do I really need to download 74 Patches?? It's taking decades here.

It does take a while to get them done but, just as you get comfortable with the update bar being stalled in place, it will finish on you.

Don't stop in the middle, though, it will be a complete reload, if you do.

I'm not sure at this time as to how this works, where you maybe forced to re-download the game to catch up.

Nevertheless, you may better consider trying the Repair Tool to see if that might speed up the process for you.

It can be accessed from the browser or standalone.

(accessible from the Browser with the two Gear symbol on the top right of the Patcher) Here is where you find it on the Patcher:

or run the standalone Repair Tool found here: http://mwomercs.com/...public-release/

You can cancel the updating process as soon as you see it start to download the next patch i.e. after it finishes installing the previous patch. The patcher should continue patching from the last incomplete patch if you decide to go that route.

You may save some time doing what Praetor Knight suggested i.e. use the Repair Tool as it should only download those files that you need as opposed to entire patch files some parts of which have been subsequently superseded.

Hmm... I would advise against stopping it generally,

but am curious how this might compare against trying the Repair Tool or just starting from scratch?

This dilemma is due to how MWO is updated through their system and using the alternate Repair Tool; I've remained more or less active as the process has played out over-time, and have not needed to deal with extended periods of patching myself yet, but the very few times of trouble, the Repair Tool has helped me.

The only concern from there, could be dealing with issues outside player control like being stuck on Time Warner.

Good Luck and Godspeed on resolving this matter!

Sounds like you'd probably be better off with a fresh install at this point.

Agreed.
If you have any settings you want to save, make a copy of your profiles folder ( .../Piranha Games/MechWarrior Online/USER/Profiles ) and then do the full reinstall, it will take a while but you should get a client that's completely up to date. After you've reinstalled the game you can just move the copy of the profiles folder back to it's original location if you made one and all your settings will be restored.

In my experience the reinstall downloads faster than the individual files the repair tool fetches - I'm guessing there is more resources in the server farm dedicated to fresh install requests rather than repair requests.

That might just be because most active players will patch within 24 hours of a new patch release, and a significant portion will patch within hours or minutes of a new patch release, so the download server is most likely to reach it's bandwidth limit at that time.

- EDIT -
Nevermind, just realised what you were getting at ^_^
----

Reinstalling from scratch has always been quicker for me after an F-Read failure - usually its the 1GB file that breaks (objects.pak?), and this can take an hour to fetch. And if the repair tool is run a second time, it usually decides that it isn't happy with what it just did and tries to download it again!
A full install is 5GB, and usually takes about an hour for me in peak European time, 2 hours is the absolute max I have seen.

Interested to hear if anyone else has some metrics on this, as it might help PGI make the repair option a little more efficient?
