I feel the need of cleaning the name of this excellent spin off.
I tried mechassault and played mechassault 2 a lot.
They are good titles and excelent spin-offs with a quality that other franchises would wish to have.
I'm surprised to see threads like this one:
http://mwomercs.com/...-mechassault-3/

A new Battletech oriented game always means good news for the franchise.

I have made a list of features that mechassault has and mwo does not. Some are not a god idea for mwo and others are really cool.

Working CW.
campaign (with a really silly story, but enjoyable)
good graphics for the time.
game modes (a lot of them and really diferent to each other not like in mwo)
horde (really fun mode)
tanks.
meeting points with pilots (you can make different animations and wait until the match starts)
local multi-player.
free custom matches.
VoIP.
infantry (not really useful but you can realize the size of the mechs on foot, and feel tinny)
a lot of maps (with different environments)
almost completely destructible environment (trees buildings rocks)
elementals (the battlearmour version can force the ejection of mech pilots)
shell ejecting ballistics (custom locations for each mech, really cool feature)
animated takedowns for critical leg shots (I really like this one)
VTOL (basically a support plane)
dropeable turrets (VTOL)
scale (the different classes have a proper size)
walk, run, legged, falling animations (for all the mechs!)
damaged mech effects (not only smoke. sparks, gas etc.)
engine explosions (a bit dangerous for mwo, maybe for criticals?)
lore references.
soundtrack (and not a bad one)
realistic looking Jump Jets (they look like rocket engines making a lot of smoke)

MechAssault was a good generic action game.

It was a terrible Battletech game.

I had a lot of fun with those games too.

I can understand the hate though. The only thing these games had in common with Mechwarrior were the mechs and the setting. The gameplay principles are the polar opposite of what everyone loved about the classic Mechwarrior titles.

I understand the situation too, but its the definition of SPIN-OFF like halo wars, Mega Man Soccer , FF tactics, mario golf kart etc

I too played them, but indeed they weren't Battletech. More like that Dark Age crap.

I genuinely ask for everyone that hate this games to play them objectively for themselves.

They are good games for the time
excellent battletech SPIN-OFFS
bad mechwarrior games.
complete and polished games

The important thing is to look behind and take the good parts to improve the present.

Spin-offs attract different audiences to established franchises, I learned about battletech with this games, they are good and deserve a recognition.

Yeah I never really understood the blind hate, they were fun games.

I mean who doesn't like stealing an enemy Atlas from their base and then using it to destroy said base?

When I played them I was heavily into MW 3 and 4, I was also really getting into TT at the time, the first one felt a little like battletech, till I had to steal an elemental and then fight an atlas as an elemental.... Yea not my idea of a good time.....

That being said, it did do a good job with destructible buildings, a feat I wish we could see in MWO.

As for the second game, if it had been any other universe, or a new IP I think it would have been fantastic, but it just wasn't battletech.

Man I hated Mach Assault. I can't even remember the game as it just is some big hazy ball of anger. Hell the Crescent Hawk games were better.

I grew up with MW2 and I had a lot of fun playing MechAssault.

Loved the entrance of the Elementals *cue heavy metal*

Yeah... the magical repair and re-arm bays that could restore all your armor in like 10 seconds, for chrissakes I think it featured you picking up power-ups.

Heathen! Begone! ;)

I had a fair bit of fun playing the first one, in spite of all the blatant canon violations (magma ppc's, or lava cannons, or whatever? lol). The game was good if Battletech was completely ignored, just as the first of the new Star Trek movies is also not bad, if one pretends one is not actually watching a Star Trek movie.

The second one, though, while the gameplay was still good, the storyline got so incredibly stupid, I simply could not handle it anymore, and had to stop halfway through. As someone who has endeavored to play every Battletech video game ever made, this one has to be the worst, IMHO. It was the only one I could not finish, including the Gameboy one I borrowed from a friend.

As long as you aren't a hardcore BT grognard, you'll enjoy MechAssault 1 and 2. It also introduced a lot of people to BT, so I see that as a positive.

I was introduced via MW2, so I already knew it was a simple console game, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

One of the worst game's I've ever played. A true insult to the franchise.

That's pretty funny because ttk in that game was much longer compared to this game. The heat overall allowed for more shots fired before overheating. There were no OP meta mechs (granted you had to play assaults pretty much to be competitive- this would have been fixed if they had made kills equal to points so that a 100 ton mech was worth 100 points).

Most people hated MA 2 because of the alpha one shot BS.

What is even funnier is that I hated that game before MWO even existed. Go figure.

I always thought they were pretty fun games as well. Sure they weren't amazing, and took liberties, but they were still fun.

There's room in a franchise for some expansion. I was introduced to the franchise with Mechwarrior 2, I played Mechwarrior 3, played the hell out of Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance and Mercenaries, and had a good time with Mechassault 1 and 2.

There are two kinds of hardcore fans in any franchise: Those who accept and enjoy new takes on what they love, and those who see any change as the endtimes. Sadly the latter tends to be the most vocal.

its just an spin off, they are not the same type of game but they have the same characters.
it's mario kart an insult to super mario franchise?
