As of right now a merc unit simply selects who they want to work for & dives right in. That is not accurate. The employer should be choosing which merc unit they want fighting for them, determining the pay & salvage they get:

as well as what type of contract they will be offering:

which should be advertised so everyone can see.

Come on PGI, get it together.

Good post. God, I wish PGI would just use more of the Battletech lore to give MWO some depth.

I keep saying that I have a suspicion that not all the BT literature was published in Canada.

That would explain a LOT of "gaps" in their lore here.....like that whole merging of the Lyrans and Fedrats and the 4th Succession War (not to mention the war of 3039) never happening.

I am a leader of a Merc Unit and I agree with you.

of course, we have to wave the BETA flag - EARLY Beta... so some of this may come, there is hope.

Right now we just click a planet and defend or attack along our employer border/ OR fight against a Clan attack / Clan held planet...

Contracts - we need them and we need them done right

EDIT - wording wrong...DUH, still sleepy

I would love it if we mercs had a more robust contract system. House players get manufacturer perks and mercs get different contract perks. Not holding my breath though.

Contracts would go along way in keeping people fighting for a certain side. Right now there isn't any reason to jump ship for somewhere nicer.

I also agree with Noesis bandits/pirates could be used to help some of the smaller factions keep from getting rolled. Say the fedrats have to defend a planet out on their periphery, that is a whole group of fedrats that can't attack the Confederation.

To this I say, well, thats not entirely true. As a Merc Unit you can contract yourself to a particular House (the House has NO SAY SO in it, sadly) and make it short, 1 to 2 weeks. let you Pilots build up ti Level 8 or higher in LP. Reap lots of rewards. Then, once that contact is over, take another contract with a different House that has no issue with the 1st one and so the same. mercs doing that can earn LOTS of rewards and CBills without affecting LP to any House current or former .... Many are doing this

But that's how they did it in the lore as well, so what's the problem? Plenty of lore units made new contracts that ensured they wouldn't have to fight their former employers.

No problem with that method of reaping rewards,

The problem is the House has no say in who signs up with them in our current way of CW. So you arent really MANAGING Mercs, you (as a House) are only hoping they perform and perform well. If they dont, they can still resign at the end of the contract and you (as the House) have zero say in it. Look at it in real life comparison. If you were a manager and your employees worked via contract, and you had 1 or a few that simply did not perform to your expectations, you would think very hard before re-newing their contract, but good performers would be welcomed as long as you have work for them, no?

Of course I have to wave the Beta Flag, because that is what it is for now

Just to throw my negative two cents in here......

CW is still in "beta," and I understand that. However, any of you that think PGI is actually going to develop this thing any further than is absolutely necessary to shut up the community are deluded. You simply cannot base predictions of how a company will perform based on empty promises alone. You have to take a look at their previous track record. Whether or not PGI has turned over a new leaf and improved on communication and actual game content is less than conclusive. Historically speaking, no single item has ever been added to this game without being broken upon release....and broken even more with every patch added to it.

I fail to see how CW will be any different than anything else that they've ever released. I enjoy playing it but I'm not expecting anything to change in the near future.

It might very well happen, very soon.......even though the MRBC wasn't founded until 3052. PGI doesn't seem to like the time line the way it was originally written, so who knows? Hell, we might even completely skip Tukayyid and just jump straight to Dark Ages.

aye it would definitely add a level of uniqueness to the game that has been lacking. I hope with the implementation of logistics that is coming, they'll rework the merc system.

The faction Leader is supposed to be ISSUING the contracts to us Mercs. Then we either accept or refuse them.

Canadian here *waves*

I've got all the novels except for some of the Dark Ages ones... so... that's not an excuse. Even the TT games found their way up here... but not in any substantial numbers.

Until contracts are actually worth something, it doesn't matter at all. Right now, contracts are crap, it's just a step we have to go thru in order to participate.

One piece of the contract system that really bugs me is having a guild/team/corp holding planets in two different factions. That really needs to be unpossible. If I have planets in Davion space, no way should I be able to own planets in Kurita space, or better yet, clan space.

You defeat the Clan Occupying force, Said planet is now Occupied by your faction. In this case House Davion.

Now does the faction leader station you there or send in a relief force.

What do you think the "50 LP + 75,000" for a successful attack or defense is? That's the contract pay out. You as a merc agree to that level of pay when you chose to take the offerened 7 14 28 or Perm Contract length.

And Clans should NEVER be able to hire mercs.
