Hey guys,

I'd really like to bring my GAR into a game, and not feel like I'm just wasting an Assault slot.

I'm finding the A's left arm being most useful, but without LT hard points it makes it very hard to create assymetrical builds with enough firepower.

I'm finding even using my RA as a shield, the hitboxes don't help... it feels so soft...
I'm torso twisting, I'm playing like an aggressive pansy...

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Using the D with 2ERLL in CT, and 4 ERML in LA... seems to do ok. Still soft.

Wait for quirks. Mine will likely stay unleveled for just this reason.

There has to be a way to pilot this thing like a boss! even before quirks.

Why? I know a lot of people like the idea that all mechs can be great, but some are simply worse than others. The GAR has literally no meaningful advantages over the Clan heavies (nor even really the WHK). Maybe in a 3/3/3/3 required 12-man where you could all be moving 89.1 or faster you could cover its weaknesses, but that's the best you're ever going to do. It's literally one of the worst mechs in the game right now and it costs your team a BNC, KGC or DWF in all likelihood.

I agree with everything you've said... all I'm saying is that there has to be some way to pilot this thing to it's own maximum potential- which will never be that great, but still

Fair enough. Major in lasers and play it like a medium, it seems to me.

Where's your sense of wonder gone Terc? Where's your sense of adventure?!

I actually tied into my gargoyles recently and ended up enjoying them.

I've used the same build to level all 3 variants... 2xCLPL + 4xCSPL

It does all right:

Some folks say you HAVE to do 6xCSL in the arms... and 1xCLPL in the torso, but honestly, the X/Y torso movement is too slow to make that very viable. Having the 2xCLPLs in the right arm provide for much better range/speed of motion and accuracy.

I'm not an assault pilot by any stretch. The only other assault chassis i've elited was the VTRs. If i can do this well in the gargoyles, i'm sure many others can do far, far better.

You're a medium pilot. I actually think that's more applicable.

My sense of wonder? I'm dead inside. I thought everyone knew that? It happened when I joined the Metawhores' Guild. ;)

I haven't had a lot of luck with the Gargoyle. It's an assault that plays like an enormous version of one of the lighter heavies - but worse.

I've had a fair amount of good fortune playing this variant and loadout:

GAR-D (Brawler)

As with most brawlers, you stay with the pack and try to remain out of sight so you don't lose too much armor before the 'melee' happens. Then dive into the fray when the lines break exploiting any weaknesses you can find. I really like the way the CMPL and CERSL compliment each other with their shorter durations. It doesn't look like much on paper, but if you get used to juggling 3-4 weapon groups it can work pretty well.

The heatsink doesn't do much and can be replaced with more ammo, but I don't seem to run out of ammo in the current configuration.

Granted, I still don't do as well in this as other brawlers, but it at least has given me some way to enjoy these seemingly paper giants.

I'm using mine as a dedicated brawler, doing fine thus far. 1LBX20, 2CERMLs(CT), 4 CERSLs, the rest LBX20 ammo. I'm good with fast mechs of any kind so it suits my playstyle, its not for everyone though.

NEVER!!! UAC20, SRM6, 2xMedLas & 4xSmlLas then run around back and shoot them in the bum! Just do not expect to do it better then a Firestarter...

I have not tried your Man O War. So basically what you are saying is, that it kinda works like an oversized Firestarter??

How to pilot a Gargoyle so it's not a liability? Same as any other mech. Well.

Although it currently might not be as good as other assault mechs I'd rather have a good pilot driving a Gargoyle over a bad one dying in a Direwolf any day of the week. Most of the the times it's how you drive rather then what you drive IMHO.

From my experience:

The damage spread gets a lot better with basics+speed tweak unlocked.

Aside from that, build it and handle it like the 80-ton equivalent of an XL-equipped Cent-Sparky hybrid.

It's not often the star, but it can do some work after it's broken in.

Edit: clarity

you can't because the gargoyle invests tonnage for speed that other mechs have. the tradeoff is less weapon laodout, bigger prfile with a bit more armor. and by this characteristics its currently inferior to other mechs, especially the TBR. so you are kinda always a bit of a liability.

But you cna make a laservomit mech of it and pilot it similar to a TBR with similar results. yet they will always be below what you couls squeeze out of a TBR.

GAR(bage)-D 3 ER Large Lasers and 3 Er med lasers.

Hunt for mediums and slow lights and use the range of the ER LL as your buffer. Dont let peeps get to close and you will do well. You can actually be pretty sneaky in this thing if no one sees that giant football helmet coming from a mile away.

The other one i like is the Prime I run 5 ER med Lasers and a Gauss on the arm....its a build similar to the ones all clan mechs can use (aside from Mist Lynx and Kit fox) and it works awesome.

I'm actually glad the Gladiator came along.

I never thought anything would replace the Summoner as Clan Most Complete Muppet of a Mech.

I sold off my A & D. and stripped the Prime of everything so I could outfit other USEFUL mechs.

I mastered the Gargoyles. There's no magic to the build options. Either go standard can laser vomit (ERLL(s) or LPL(s) + MLs), or carry a single large bore UAC and carry 4 to 5 MLs.

Forget the missile hardpoints exist, unless you're thinking of carrying LRMs.

You are soooo going to regret that when all the terrible clan mechs get IS-esque level quirks.
