I started playing right before open beta, then took a long break while the game developed. Just got back to it a few weeks ago, and noticed I was getting killed fast and furiously just like you. At first I thought there had been drastic changes to the damage modeling during my break. That may or may not be, and it was irrelevant because I did manage to get past the instant dying phase with some work. Here is what I noticed, which is the only thing tat hasn't been explained in detail already:

Torso Twisting: In most FPS games, you don't have any reason to stop looking straight at a visible enemy. That's because most FPS games don't model damage in detail over specific areas like MWO does. If you are looking directly at your enemy, that means you are exposing your front to his shots the entire time. Practice jerking your torso away from a visible enemy you are shooting it out with between your shots. When you have that motion to a reflex, work on turning the strongest part of your mech toward the enemy. The more damage you can spread, the more you can take, the longer you live.

This game is the most unforgiving thing for new players that I have never seen. The Cadet bonus is absolutely laughable and you might get a mech loaded out and tweaked that might give you some advantage. Until then I'd recommend the trial Storm crow.

My suggestion would be take long range weapons (if you can afford it), hang off in the back and watch how the match develops. Frankly Solo queue is a terrible place to learn because it CAN teach you bad habits. Would also highly recommend a newb friendly unit such as the Templars, SWOL etc.

Also welcome to Mech Warrior

Thanks for the advice guys, why is the Mad cat a prime choice in combat?

It's considered by many to be shockingly OP. It has a perfect blend of speed, agility and firepower. Also if you can get used to twisting properly can be disgustingly hard to kill.
A very dangerous mech in the right hands and honestly, needs to be killed quickly.

Also have a look here:

Some ideas for types of builds you might like to try.
