Gonna have to go with Sword Art Online, the premier anime of our generation their early episodes were a little too new wave for my tastes, but when episode six released, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole series has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the season a big boost. It's been compared to Attack On Titan, but I think Sword Art has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor

For a different slice of the mecha pie I would second Gurren Lagann and Full Metal Panic, and throw Giant Robo: the Animation and GR Giant Robo into the hat.

Berserk
Claymore
Black Lagoon
Attack on Titan
Trigun
Cowboy Beebop
Outlaw Star
Rorouni Kenshin
Gungrave
Ninja Scroll
Samurai Champloo
Shura no Toki
Noir
Elfen Lied
Hellsing
Highschool of the Dead
Full Metal Panic
Basilisk
Darker than Black
Blade of the Immortal
Boogiepop Phantom
Desert Punk
Gantz
Samurai 7 (Yes they did an anime remake with big robots)
Ghost in the Shell & Standalone complex

A lot of those are pretty dark and gruesome (my personal taste). There are others, but those are what came to mind first. Only mech anime I was huge fan of was 08th MS squad. I'd add Robotech but I haven't seen it in so long.

Space Battleship Yamato (original and 2199)
Fist of the North Star

I'v heard good things about Space Battleship Yamamoto. I've never erally been really big into Anime to be honest. I've been watching somehere and there.

So far the only two I would recommend would be:

Robotech - This played on Sunday monrings before church along iwht the Batteltech cartoon. As near as I can tell it was the origional one and I liked it up until it did an unexplained time warp forward. I didnt really care for it after that

Inuyasha - This isn't really a sci fi themed one bu a friend at work pointed me towards it and I've really enjoyed it.

Gurren Lagann is probably my favorite of all time. Each episode somehow manages to trump the previous in terms of moments of awesome. For a frame of reference the first episode has a guy challenging a giant mech with only a katana.

Hellsing Ultimate and The Tower of Druaga are pretty high on my favorites list.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Trigun, Soul Eater, Desert Punk, Afro Samurai, Highschool of the Dead, and Excel Saga are also pretty good ones.

Also, I can't believe no one has mentioned FLCL yet. Such a mind-bendingly awesome series.

Watching dubbed anime is grounds for immediate dismissal from the DCMS

Area 88. It may be old, it may be short, but it's pretty fun to watch.

Higurashi no naku koro ni
How is it possible that it was not mentioned in almost 4 full pages of this thread? This seems for a long part like guys just picking from the 'most popular' list.

Other than that with previous mentiones before
Fate/Zero
Claymore
Strike Witches
Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust
Baccano
Hellsing Ultimate

And for comedy that is actually funny
Lucky Star
Minami-ke (Skip seasons 2&3)
Yuri Yuri

For Mech anime my only true reccomendation not previous mentioned would Burst Angel
