If they have to charge $40 for a hero assault mech, imagine what theyd have to charge for a coop campaign... becuase maps are WAY more time intensive to make than mechs.
What they actually need to add is solaris.

So we can get free 1v1 private matches?
THey could implement that so easy, just make a "Sol 7 Q", where it searches only for mech class and 1 player in a similar class mech....

Thats why Warframes method is so awesome, same missions, but you can basically just play any one you want at your time. Mission types are numerous, fun stuff.

Please direct your attention to this thread. PGI has been fairly responsive over the last year or so, indicating this thread may actually lead somewhere as it was opened by their community manager, the wonderful Tina Benoit.

I'd like to see them do a Planetside 2 style campaign mode where the players control where the fighting will be.

Mission based gameplay with off map assets and some AI (tanks/helicopters/elementals/etc) controlled by a human commander in classic overhead RTS mode and a group of human controlled mechs goes against a team that is composed the same way. Could you imagine how fun Attack/Defend would be under those conditions?
Anyways, that's enough getting myself excited about a game that will never exist....

adds a bit of replayability to it. they could even use the maps we already have

I believe you are envisioning more of a single-player campaign played co-op. Russ did mention a campaign in a town hall, so you're not exactly wrong. I don't think it would be quite like you are thinking, though.
But there are a lot of co-op multiplayer campaigns that do not get stale. Diablo II and III and Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 are both campaign co-op games and well-enjoyed even years after their release.
Other co-op multiplayer games, like Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition, have less campaign-like play and are more randomized, and they are still fun after hundreds of hours, too.

I know. Remember how much they charged for Community Warfare? Outrageous.
