Ok we'll go with the 155mm since thats what Im used to dealing with they travel at around 800mps which is around 1790 mph.
No Im not talkin charge 7 whitebag. It peaks at that, the loss of round speed you have at the top of the arc
is negligible so the loss of penetration(which is what I thought you might be talkin about) would be almost as negligible aswell.

Also are we talking maximum range or maximum effective? sometimes they get confused.

(edit) I put fps instead mps,

But the difference is that your Howitzer round is build and designed to fire at targets in a ballistic arc, as opposed to direct fire rounds. Look at this chart, it shows the numbers for rifle rounds and illustrates my point beautifully.

Wait, who am I blocking? I still want to know if even if shots drop. I don't think they should, why in the future, would it matter if a shot drops or not, maybe maybe if we have like a super heavy planet, everything moves slower, and shots drop, then yes, it'll be better, I mean we have a cold planet, that's for lazer jockeies, what about a place where bringing Cannon and ammo is better than lazer

A hot sandy desert planet might favor the ballistic guys.

The HUD design would be pretty awesome. To have different modes depending on the weapon selected and type of attack (direct/indirect).

Now that we have been playing for a few months, lets bring this question back to life. I would also like to add that in MWO a ballistics max range is 3x the optimal range. How fast does the damage drop off?. And as far as I can tell yes, the AC rounds do drop and yes you can hit a target at 800 (near max range) with an AC 20 round.
