Right now I'm running 4MPLs, 6JJs, ams 1 ton of ammo and the std 210 engine. Whats a good XL engine to buy?

I use a 285 with 2 JJ's, can do a 295 if you're ok with 1.

The XL295 is the go-to for FS9s (and useful for other lights and mediums as well). IMO, the most useful XL engines for lights are, in pretty much this order: XL300,XL295, XL 285, XL280.

Ive found 6 Meduim Pulse lasers and the biggest XL engine that will fit to be the best for me. I tried 4 MPL dual AMS and jumpjets but it didn't seem to have the same stopping power.

"The meta" has pretty much settled on 5MPL and the max engine. 6 is a bit too hot, and the XL280 to manage the heat makes it a bit too hot to manage the slashing style it requires. That's my personal conclusion as well. I love the power of 6, but it's too hot too often.

The meta build for the FS9-S is a XL 295, 5 Medium Pulse and one jump jet.

This is my preferred firestarter, and I like to run it like this:

FS9-S

4 MPLAS in the arms, 3 SLAS in the torsos, allows you to take the max engine and 4 JJs. I like the 3 SLAS as opposed to the "meta" extra MPLAS as the DPS is higher while the weight is lower, allowing for better jump power and giving you a low heat option for when you're running too hot to keep firing all of those MPLAS. It performs better with a lost arm as well, which will happen sometimes. I feel that if you want 5 MPLAS you should be in a Cicada 2B instead.

Here is the build I run with my FS9-S. You can overheat if you don't pay attention to it, but once you learn your limits and when to single fire your MPLs this is one mean little mech. Averaged around 600+ damage last night with it.

Don't forget about the XL-265, XL-255, XL-210, XL-235 :) (though not necessarily for firestarters, but other lights thrive on these engines)

Here's a slight improvement on your build.

I think you could also swap 2 of the JJs for a DHS. However, that is a matter of personal preference.

Quite the thread necro...

The build I referenced was this. Another option drops a JJ and a little engine for a DHS like this. You can also run arm lasers if you prefer the movement of the arms (with the FS9's terrible pitch, this is reasonable, though you give up convergence and have more vulnerable weapons). If you want arm lasers and the extra DHS, you can run it like this. Slow but better on hot maps sometimes. Finally, a PUG special. It's hot, it's sluggish, but it punches hard. It worked with earlier FS9-S quirks but even pugging I think I'd skip it now.

Personally, I have run the first four builds all in comp for different maps and strategies, once owning four FS9-Ss for that reason. But it's moment of meta relevance has passed and now I just PUG with it from time to time, favoring the XL285 asymmetrical build.
