So I just got the new Cataphract as a reward for completing the challenge. I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. It doesn't have any quirks, but all the other Phracts do. Is this an oversight or is this what PGI decided would make the mech balanced? Maybe the quirks really are there but it's a tooltip oversight? All of the other champ mechs that I know about got quirks, so what gives?

Well PGI thinks it's the best IS Heavy so it doesn't need any.

So why do all the other Cataphract variants get quirks but this one?

PGI thinks Cataphract-3D is the best IS heavy in the game so it doesn't need any.

Any specific "OP" loadout that got them to this conclusion? Results from my new toy are rather mixed so far, so I'm still shifting around guns and stuff.

It's because the phract WAS one of the best heavies, and the 3D had jump jets...

Some builds to try

2AC5(orUAC5) 4Mlas +xl340

4(er)LL

2LL 2LpL

Dual gauss sniper if youre boring

2PPC 2LL if you want to be a unicorn (this build rocked about 18 months ago)

I put four tag lasers in it, one machine gun, 9 tons of ammo, a command module, biggest engine, all the jump jets I can stuff into it and run around fussing at everyone for sucking after I die.

The OP config was Gauss+2PPCs. Now many do AC20 + Mlasers.

I think the OP needs a little more info, rather than, "PGI thinks it's a tier 1". There is history, a background, behind why it has no quirks. Way back Jump-sniping/pop-tarting, whatever you want to call it was rampant. Back then, 1 jumpjet was essentially the same as 5, so mechs didn't have to pile on the jumpjets to get adequate air time. Also back then, there was no shaky reticule or randomness when firing your jumpjets, so it was easy to aim. One of the biggest mech offenders using this playstyle was the Cataphract 3D. So, since then PGI has improved jumpjets (yes improved them, I don't use 'em and glad they are nerfed), implemented the shaky reticule and randomness to firing while using jumpjets, and labeled the 3D a tier one not needing any quirks. I'm glad cause the jump-sniping was a black, dark time in MWO as too many pilots hid behind it's crutch not being able to play any other way effectively.

PGI has said they are not done with quirks, so expect other quirk passes in which I'm sure the 3D will get something just like they gave the Victors minor ones.

The quirk system was handled by the meta's tier system. the mechs in tier 1 got no quirks. mechs with JJs got one less set of quirks. mechs with ECM get one less set of quirks. so mechs with JJs and ECM get jipped on quirks.

The Cataphract 3D was the best heavy in the game for a while. Most champions are the "meta build" at the time of creation. So a few of them need updates.

The fine ladies and gentlemen gave a good explanation, but I find that pictures are generally better.

The picture was drawn before the screenshot happened. It was that rampant back in the day.

Hoverjets™ affected the Cataphract-3D a lot, so it was standing in mediocrity for a while.

I didn't mind it doesn't get quirks. I enjoy the cataphracts. My only regret is that is a heavy, and the heavy que is always super big. I hate waiting so it becomes very hard for me to want to go out and skill them up.

I bought and sold mine (3D) twice now.
I'll gauss it up, 4 smalls and a jj and take it out for a spin.
Saw a couple today already, man, it was something back in the day. You'd get 2-3 of those in an advancing line and just roll that side of the map.

It is my understanding that along with Orions, Cataphracts will be getting their quirks re-evaluated and revamped in the next pass.

Because they based the tiers off of the old poptart meta, so -3D, HGN, Victor etc straight got the shaft.

Exactly this, the thought of the 3D being on similar ground with a TW makes me chuckle.
