I use naming conventions for ready identification of a mechs status.

If its fully quirked I use "Q", Not quirked "NQ"
If its fully moduled I use "M", partially moduled "PM"
Then engine size. 275x or 275s as appropriate.

So, CPLT-C1(F)= Q M 300x

For my clan mechs, I just name them: Kit Fox=Foxy, Adder=Addy, etc...

Inner Sphere mechs:
Jenner Oxide: Jenner IIC http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Jenner_IIC (MW2 Nostalgia)

Blackjack 3: Peek-A-Boo

Centurion A: Zombie
Centurion D: Kheper http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Kheper

Catapult A1: Splatapult (or Beta, or E-101 beta [I like it's MK2 design, and I'm a sucker for the style of attacks he does] cause this mech is still in my mech bay from closed beta)
Catapult C1: Best LRMs

Cataphract 4X: Easymode (well..... they've added more mechs that can do 3+ ac/5 since I used it, but it was stupid easy. at the time even if i was playing like a total tard, I would aways get 2 Kills on some fresh mechs with 500+ damage)
Cataphract 3D: Jumpsniper

Clan:
Mad Dog Prime: Dream Mech
Mad Dog A: Splat Dog
Second Mad Dog A: Rain Maker
Mad Dog B: FrankenDog (if there's room for the name. I hate asymmetrical builds)
Mad Dog C: PuppySniper (or Dog Sniper)

Nova Prime: The OL 1 2

Dire Wolf/Daishi (whichever omnipods I settle with): Dashy

Gargoyle: FOOTBALL

Warhawk: Spitter (PPCs look like spitwads to me in MWO)

Mist Lynx: Fire Moth (again MW2 nostalgia, and since I really doubt Fire Moth will be added due to masc.)

Ironically enough I call my Cicada 3M= CDA-3M, My Hunchback 4G= HBK-4G, and so on.

^QFT. Stock designation works fine. I'd only change it if I was running doubles of something, but the only double I've got is a CN9-A and a CN9-A(C) from an event, so they're already distinguished by the (C) - that's how I know which one has Artemis.

I named my Dire Wolf Prime The White Whale...matching paint job to boot. Otherwise, I stick with the stock names.

AS7-BH - BD-100 - Named after my favorite character's Exo-suit, Wolf Bronski, from Exo Squad.

Motherlovin Wolf. Motherlovin Bronski. Yes.

I usually name My mechs after cartoon characters.
I've got a griffin-1S that I refer to as "Stormo", from Adventure time. (Haven't actually changed it's name in game).
My Griffin-Sparky is currently referred to as "Finn", from the same cartoon. (Also not actually named).
Then there's My Catapult Jester "PinkiePult", a reference to a character from that cartoon about the talking horses that countless horrible wastes of flesh unfortunately masturbate to...

... I like cartoons.

I name my stalkers after bunnies. STK-5M 'fluffy bunny', STK-3F 'silly rabbit', STK-4N 'pika pika'. Okay, that one is also named after Pikachu.

I named the thunderbolts after My Little Ponies. 'Thunderlane' for the 9S and 'Blossomforth' for the 5SS.

KGC-000(L) got named 'King Cool' because that's how I read the model number.

Most of the rest are kind of boring.

I’ve only named one mech thus far of my 50+, my CN9-A. It is painted all white, the brightest white available and named White Knight.

The day they “updated” the Centurion weapon art to replace the classic gun with the derp we have now, I wept sweet tears of irony as I ran across the battle field.

I used to name my mechs after ancient gods. (greek, Roman, norsk, egyptian, heathen and so on)
Stopped that, when I ran out of cool names and meanings (Had about 60 mechs back then) and switched to default designations (best for a mechhangar with 101 machines) :D

I've noticed a lot of players like the one word nick names (with the occasional adjective thrown in)

I am surprised no one using using the Pacific Rim naming convention. In some ways is seems very clan-like.
Cherno Alpha
Gypsie Danger (Carlos Danger?)
Striker Eureka
Crimson Typhoon
Coyote Tango
etc...
