I am not sure where to ask this so I will just ask here.

So, I want to buy a heavy hero mech. What do you guys think is a good Heavy Hero mech? I am looking at all the heavy mechs except for iv-Four. Eyeballing Protector and Jester. I see a lot of people recommend Ilya Mormets hands down. I'm not a big fan of around 64 KPH and if I were to go that route Protector seems a little nicer with a smaller hitbox. If I can use the mech for CW cool. If I can use it for pugs Great. I am trying to make the best informed decion I can.

I'm not solely stuck on heavy mechs. If you have any suggestions of another class that is cool too. For example, Dragon Slayer or The Grey Death.

Also, would you wait for Hero mech sales? How often are they?

Well you got the Ilya, Jester, Firebrand,
none of the others is really worth it.

Ilya can be devistating. 5 UAC 5s and 3 MLs will rip assaults to shreds.
Firebrand is basically just a better Catapult K2.
Jester is not so much worth it at this point. Its good, but the other two out class it.

Also, I would love to add a poll to this but looks like they removed the option or something. Please correct me if I am wrong and let me know how it can be done.

For ease of use, the Firebrand, for more complicated builds, the Ilya. For more of a challenge then the other two, but easier to farm money, the Jester.

My recommendation to you about the ones you suggested (I own both) are as follows:

1. Try out other similarly perked/hard point Orions to see if you can build one you like. It's a bit awkward.
You can either be a mini atlas (slow and close range, big alpha), or go bigger long range guns but have to XL (even with the perks this can be challenging).
But at least there are a couple of similar non hero versions that you can test out first.

2. I like my Jester (fast, jump jets, very XL friendly), but it's energy only. I know you know that, but make sure you've tried out similar energy only mechs to be confident you can handle the heat.
I find my Jester is stuck being a low alpha, good dps, good range mech. But it's a mid-long range support mech. It can't handle close quarters too well, nor a face of against a heavy alpha mech.

I do enjoy playing both though.
Personally I made my Orion a mid-long range, heavy hitter XL mech. It works well for me.
And my Jester is just like the quirks (R LL, 2 AMS). I feel weaker than I think I should in it. But it's reasonable.

Mastery Packs may be worth it.
They have hero mechs inside and provide 3 variants to skill up the Basic Masteries.
Of the Hero mechs, I like the Misery, Ilya and Ember. Sparky is ok too.

I own every hero mech in the game. I would pick the Firebrand if I was you, just for the diversity of builds (Protector before quirks was a great mech, it's meh now).

High gun mounts mean you barely peak your head over a ridge and can fire your big guns and lots of popular effective builds available such as: dual guass, 2xAC20, 2ppc + 2 AC5, 2xlb10x.

I have the Protector and I don't like what they did with quirks. For being the famed mech that the much vaunted Kerensky piloted with a snub-nose PPC, they gave it no PPC quirks, or quirks for the stock Gauss. But that's just me.

I tried the Ilya once on the public test server. It was pretty brutal with triple UAC5 and medium lasers.

I find the Orion Hero - Protector an enjoyable ride.

I feel their torso hitbox are evenly spread out and can roll damage quite effectively, I usually have at least 1 side torso gone before they got my CT.
Playing it like a mini Atlas, 1x AC20, 2x ASRM6, 2x ML.
A STD 300 engine can push you to 64kph and 71kph after speed tweak

The Ilya 3x UAC5 require too much face time for my liking.
The Jester is a nice little PPC poptart or go 4x LL like a mini (jumping)Stalker.

Only heavy heroes I own are Protector and Flame. Protector's a lot of fun, IMO. Granted I haven't run it since before quirks were added so I don't know how it runs now, but I know before quirks it worked pretty well.

I hear good things about the Firebrand, jag's always seem to be pretty good mechs.

Jester was kind of the madcat of the IS, and K2, the JJ nerf hurt the Jester though.

Wouldn't recommend the Orion, some people think they're great, I can never get em to work and I know alot of other people struggle with them as well.

Quickdraw could be good, but giant paper leg syndrome plagues that mech, need Medium weight JJ's and movement type to really be a performer where it should be.

Ilya just like all the CTF are good in the right hands, most of them are solid performers.

In terms of a farming machine you just have the choice of Ilya, no other hero comes close. Just put 2xGauss and 3xML on it or any kind of weird 3xBallistic build and call it a day.

If you want something for "fun", this opens the field to the other three, Jester, Firebrand, Protector - for me in this order.

There are other heavy heros just to complete the list, 2 dragons (Flame and Fang) which are kinda meh and a Quickdraw Hero called IV4.
I don't own the flame or fang (but dragons) but I can't see those mechs performing any better than the rest.

And the IV4 is a story for itself but If you have no quickdraw hatelove, don't buy it.

Are you good at brawling? The Protector is probably the best STD brawler in this game. Even though it's best at brawling, it can be a great sniper/long range support too.

Are you bad at brawling? Buy the Ilya and dakka away, but it's pretty much a one-trick pony with little build possibilities. The Jester is a decent IS laser vomit. The Firebrand is pretty much your average JM with arm mounted energy. The Flame is a great hillhumper and trades well with that high mounted cannon.

Don't buy the IV if you're not a hardcore fan of the Quickdraw. Fang is also a bit meh.

Protector.

AC/20, SRM-6, 3 ML. Get in someone's face, pull all three triggers, and do not let go until they drop.

While this works, the problem in matches these days is to actually get into someone's face without being shot to junk on the way.

The Protector is also a pretty good long range mech. Twin ER Large Lasers (or just Large Lasers if you don't like the heat) in the arms, ER-PPC and Gauss Rifle in the torso.

Or get an Ilya, put 3 UACs, 3 Medium lasers, and shred everything, in seconds. Even the mighty Direwolf retreats from such firepower. plus if one mech was always good, it would be the Cataphracts, and double plus, they just gave out a bunch of champion 3Ds, so if you got that one, then you only need 1 more variant. (4X can run 4 AC5s and dakka everything to death)

This is not a decision to made in complete seriousness. Never, EVER forget to get a mech with the potential for silly lulz builds you can take out once in a while. Personally, I know of 2 for the Ilya: The paper tiger(triple gauss...never tried), and my overall favorite....the trible LBX Ilya.

I really recommend having a look around. See what others have come up with for the special chassis that might be a fun aside from more serious builds every once in a while.
