If you turn to Ebay for minis, be careful. There are a lot of people out there who have made their own molds and are recasting them. While this may seem an easy way to get the unseen mechs, it really is bad business and the quality of those recasted minis leaves a WHOLE lot to be desired.

Pretty much all the ones I've ordered have come from Miniatures4Less, and they're all still in factory packing. Recommend that one if you go Amazon.

I like the agro mechs. Haven't read the story or setting.
I'm more partial to agro mechs and their use during the Succession Wars and Clan Invasion, of which there is some but little detail of. Despite their issues I have seen some perform very well against a limited number of Clan mechs and a home field advantage with buildings, forests, etc.

Far as Battletech itself, the board games are all set in 3150 now with all new stuff and new rules.

But to appreciate Battletech, I suggest grabbing Megamek and turning on every single rule you possibly can. Let the computer handle the rules, do some stuff and check out what happens.

Nothing like taking a tank, and wiping Battlemechs out.

8 kills out of 10 enemies attributed to that tank. Twin AC/10s, 4 LRM-5s. Tracked within the first 20 seconds, still slaughtered almost everything.
(Arrows on the map are places that can and will change elevation, creating dynamic walls in this Solaris Arena.)

Missions with summaries.

Maintain an army.

You can find River City in there.

Suffer catastrophic engine failures (Stackpoles). (This pilot was already unconscious when this occurred, hence the mass of ???? because double blind rules and no one on my side to witness my unconscious pilot's mech explode with him inside of it).

Epically fail at surprise ambushes (This Dire Wolf stormed THROUGH the building, destroying it in the process to ambush and surprise the enemy, only for the Shadowhawk to jump behind it and both the Battlemaster and Shadowhawk to kick the Dire Wolf, both of them crippling the Dire Wolf's leg and destroying all four actuators in the process, making it do an instant faceplant).

Create your own mechs because why not?

Enjoy Forest Colony.

And so much more.

Stupid question, but is there a good detailed tutorial for that? I downloaded it at some point and tried to figure it out but was a little overwhelmed and/or impatient.

Dunno. Most of it is as simple as point click and experiment. The Campaign stuff isn't quite as easy to figure out, but I am learning it by toying with and experimenting. With Megamek itself -- (HQ is campaign and Lab is create units) -- you can jump right into it with basic rules by clicking "Start a Scenario" and choosing one. Good way to learn the mechanics with everything else immediately started.

I tried reading Dark Age, but damned if I could get into it. Is that the common opinion, or am I on an island?

Dark Age was considered a blight. But there's rumblings within Catalyst last I heard to blow past it and do something of a timeline reset in like the 3200's thats' going to feel a bit more like old school 3025 tech.

The timeline right now I believe is in the 3150's, and in Dark Age right now. But it's still alive and well, in fact, the current "Battletech Introductory box set" Has a brand new set of models that are fairly high quality compaired to the 25th anniversary set and look much better.

No, DA (the storyline) isn't and wasn't universally considered a "blight." Let's not oversimplify it.

Yes, the storyline in the DA novels started out quite slow, with lots of junkyard-tech. I suspect many who decided to hate the DA novels stopped reading after a few novels and thus have no idea that things did eventually spin back up to what we're accustomed to with the novels.

Beyond that, every single major twist in the storyline has been greeted by it's own uniqe set of haters who think everyone else should hate it too. That's nothing new. If you think the DA screaming and crying is bad, you should have seen the seizures the clan invasion caused.

I have that set. They're plastic, but I've been quite pleased with the set in general. Especially given the price.
