Hey, this is my attempt to create a build that improves almost all aspects of the original configuration (because I love well rounded mechs and it's one!):
HGN-732
Alternatively, you can drop a DHS and half ton of Gauss ammo for AMS.

I feel it's a good Highlander if it's your first one because the Gauss and LRM offset the slowness this chassis has (use the LRM while you're closing in to the enemy). For close range work you have 2x SRM/4+As, 3x MLs, and 1x Gauss. Or you can use this alternate config for more close range capability:
HGN-732

After completing basic, buy 2 more variants (preferably one is a 733C) so you can elite them and upgrade the engine to 325 so you can bring your firepower faster and more often!

It's currently on sale so grab one!

Tell me what you think! :D

EDIT: This build is outdated! Better version: "Perfected" (Max engine and max armor!)

If you are good to fire with the Gauss Rifle, its a very good weapon and ammo dont explode so no need for C.A.S.E but the Gauss itself gets destroyed rather fast.

Not really fond of the XL Engine, good for med and light class mechs but in my opinion better off sticking to standard engines for the assault class. I prefer to have both side torso destroyed and be still kickin. XL Engines can be viable in heavies and assault but only for the expert pilots, not the average joe.

The artemis IV system for missiles never seem to me very effective, might help but for the little it do I prefer allocate the tons per missile launcher on other stuff.

Here is my take on the Highlander 732

Yeah, Gauss is good but because of the charging mechanism you need a pilot who is well accustomed to firing that weapon in concert with the others, a.k.a. have the ability to fire the other weapons while charging and releasing the Gauss. This problem is further compounded on HGNs when you have a build that utilizes Gauss, Lasers, and SRMs because their aren't synchronized in any way possible.

I feel that XL has served me rather well so far, maybe it's because of my ELO where people just instinctively shoot CT. Because I insist on using 325 or 300, I just have a few builds that can mount an STD, like a 4x LLs + 2x SRM/6+As 733P.

As for Artemis, it's my opinion that they are crucial on HGNs with SRMs because most of my builds use SRMs as the main damage dealer up close. Without Artemis you have to engange the enemy very close (like <100m) if you want all of the missiles to connect reliably.

And thanks for posting your 732 build! I do feel though, that that LRM10 is a bit wasteful. Personally I use this:

I do understand your view on the lrm10 but trust me its far from wasted tons, I guess all boils down to play style

How do you effectively use the LRM10?

According to *my* statistics, LRMs only hit about 1/3 the time or has 33% accuracy. Looking at your build, you only has 1 ton of ammo. Were I use that build, the LRM could only contribute about 33% * 180 = 60 damage with around 3,3 damage per salvo. That's why I'm doubtful about the usefulness of that single LRM10 on your build....

I don't understand the use of all the 1/2 ammo selections...?

If it's placed on the same section as a Gauss Rifle, it's meant to "protect" the Gauss from being chance-critted and explode thus damaging you mech. If there's no GR present, it's just so that you don't lose all of your ammo when it's destroyed.

BTW because this thread was brought up again, I present you the perfected "Mk .II":
It haz all!
Max engine and max armor!

And also the variant that I usually use (Gauss, LL, SRM6):
HGN-732

Right. I still don't understand. All those half ton ammo selections can be combined into full tons for better placement. What you have linked in the above makes zero sense what so ever.

I prefer running like this:

It's bit hot, but works for me Posted Image. When i upgraded skills basic and elite it is much better and fun Posted Image. It depend on the style of game. Before i used it as an LRM boat with: 3xML, LRM 20 and 2x10. But this loadout is ideal for my playstyle.

Actually, it does make a little sense. the multiple 1/2 tons fill twice as many slots as full tons, so you reduce your ST crit chance with gauss ammo than if you have empty slots. Crit padding as it were. Also, I would swap the AMS ammo for gauss, so you can pad the left ST. If you crit your CT, you're dead anyway.
