Variations in latency are usually due to your network connection or the network somewhere between you and the data center. It usually has NOTHING to do with PGI or their game. Even worse than variations is packet loss which can happen with an overloaded router somewhere along the route that drops packets. These have to be resent and dropped packets play havoc with host state rewind and hit registration ... those features work best when the latency is relatively constant ... and don't work very well when your command to fire is lost in the ether. Depending on the network implementation, lost packets can result in desyncs and other effects.
So blame PGI for coding a CPU heavy game requiring a reasonably fast quad core to function well that is less dependent on the video hardware ... but you can't blame them for your bad network connection.
Also ... many of the features folks cite as problems do not seem to be that much of an issue.
- Matchmaking ... much much better than it used to be ... stomps are not the fault of the matchmaker .. they are generally due to player actions and the nature of the game in that it can be difficult to overcome early losses.
- Weapon balance ... much better than it used to be ... the poptart meta is much reduced ... a range of builds now appear to be viable after the Quirkening (even my HBK-4G is now a decent performer ... and it used to be my worst HBK if not my worst medium).
- UI 2.0 is functional though I think it takes too much work ... the work flows need to be better designed ... but at least you can now remove modules by double clicking them even if you can't install them the same way. Hopefully they will eventually fix the glitches and smooth out the workflows. A Smurfy style interface where you can edit all the mech sections at the same time will be preferable if they can ever implement it.
Anyway, the basic game play is still very similar to closed beta .. but overall the game has changed a lot in 2 1/2 years and is generally much better ... which would not be possible without at least some folks kicking in some money
