Mal: No!

My favorite line in the entire show.
Heh. I'm kinda partial to:
Zoe: "Preacher, don't the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killing?
Book: "Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps."

Mal: It'd boost the signal, wouldn't it?
Wash: Damn RIGHT it'd boost the signal! In fact; they'd have to stop and root out our position just so they can keep going!
...
Well maybe I should do that then!

Now I know you asked that we keep this thread clear of 'Mech designs, but I created a couple of designs inspired by Firefly.
Mal
Zoe
Jayne
Walsh
River
If anyone knows how to add white space I'll clean it up so everything is in nice rows and columns. Also I'm planning on whipping up a Simon, Shepard and Kalee versions later on. They'll be missile based support 'Mechs, to take advantage of the TAG on the River. It should also round the stable that so far only features ballistic and laser weapons.

First off, could you wrap those in spoiler tags? [ spoiler ][ / spoiler ] (without the spaces)
Secondly, I doubt you could call Gauss Rifles 'common parts'. They were only reintroduced to the Inner Sphere less than 10 years ago (based on the canon timeline and start date of MWO); it took over 10 years from the recovery of the Helm Memory Core for them to be redeveloped. The number of 'mech mechanics who've actually worked on one is probably less than 25% of the total... not that they wouldn't be able to figure it out, but it's just not that common of a weapon yet.
Third: Zoe uses a shotgun. Having both the Zoe and Jayne 'mechs using Gauss tends to trivialize the uniqueness of 'Vera', as well. I'd swap it out for an LB-10X-AC, personally, and add more armor and heatsinks. Zoe's tough as nails, after all.

You're right, and I'm going to blame putting Gausses on two different 'Mechs on how late it was when I designed them. Replaced the Gauss with an LB-10X and an AC-2. I don't like scattershot so I didn't load it as standard, but should be easy enough to swap right? Also dropped the Guardian ECM as that seemed a little to high tech for Brown Coats and the BAP for the same reason, plus it's an assault 'Mech not a scout.
Didn't add any extra heat sinks as the 'Mech can fire all its weapons of range bracket simultaneously. Long range AC-2 and LB-10X only generate 3 heat. Up close the Mediums and the LB-10X generate 14 heat so you'd build a little, however I figure you can swap between lasers one round and LB-10X the next to help manage the heat. Lastly there's plenty of criticals so if you wanted to switch FF and had the money to do so then you'd have tonnage to add heat sinks.

Not a bad thing to have the ECM, but the BAP is probably a bit out of character. Scattershot is useful in three circumstances - first, if you want to have a better chance to hit. Second, if you're crit seeking through breached armor, since each point is a separate roll. Third, you've stumbled into a bunch of infantry.
As far as Cluster being as easy to load as Standard rounds, you're correct. An ammo bay is an ammo bay.

Even at max armor, you'd only save 1.5 tons with FF. Although 1.5 tons is another three MGs or an AMS + ammo.

Normally I put ECM and C3 on everything, but its supposed to be fairly rare at this point, especially for a bunch of mercs driving patched together 'Mechs and operating out of a derelict DropShip.

Speaking of DropShips I think the Brown Coats should always use Drost IIa's. I mean the swiveling thrusters!! It's a freaking BattleTech Firefly class transport!

Switch to FF drop a half ton of armor and you can put on 2 more heatsinks, fire all your mediums and move or fire the lasers and the LB-X without moving and have no heat build up. Personally I'd just alternate my lasers attacks, one round I fire them next round I don't, or I'd only fire a couple.
