Why would you buy a mid range GPU to push resolutions of 3840*2160
That's like buying a Peugoet 206 and expecting to match Ferrari Lap times
If all you have is extreme resolutions to discredit a mid range GPU i feel sorry for you.
The OP isn't gaming at those resolutions and has stated he is unlikely to go beyond 1080P
so use the actual relevant benchmarks of 1080P from this page.

Right where it's supposed to be, playable framerates at high detail 1080P
The 280X is by now and was a mid range GPU, the 770 was a mid range GPU the 970 is now a mid range GPU. The 960 is a low buget gpu (those chips which get on the pcbs are the junk what have some faults and therefore didn't meant to be in a 980 or a 970) Those Resolutions are the price of performance. What now is >30FPS on 3840 will with new engines and games be >30FPS on 1440p in two years and in 4 years >30FPS on 1080p with same lvl of detail don't mind that textures will then bootlneck the vram maybee anyhow.

There is a catch! If you plan on upgrading to a 1080p monitor before too long and whatever card you buy now will still be used at that point, the GTX 970 becomes a better prospect. CW matches use more VRAM, and at 1080p can go over the 2GB limit that the GTX 960 would have (dependent on video settings obviously).
Good point. That is dynamic development of online games. Like a GTX 2XX with Core2Quad was handeling World of Warcraft 10 years ago well it is now to bad since the engine has developed to the need of more performance. Well MWO doesn't have the budget for development like WOW but int the end this will just happen. And CW is a clear sign for the future of the grapic quality of this game. Today i would recommend for a good quality WOW expirience 4k DSR with a 970 in WOW with maxed Details to overcome the flaws of the old engine.
