I joined MWO at the beginning of December 2014, so were talking about 8 weeks.

In that time there has been all kinds of sales, give aways and freebies.

I came from Dungeons and Dragons Online which I played exclusively for nearly 5 years.

It seems like Ive received more freebies and give aways (admittedly some have been as a result of the packs Ive bought) in 8 weeks than I ever got in all my time inn DDO.

Its great.

Is it always like this?

It wasn't always like this, but there have been big weekly sales for a while now. You have to keep in mind that this game has been around since 2012. Instead of dropping prices to match the dropping demand, PGI is using sales to entice people into buying old mechs.

Even though player income has been slashed over the last couple of years, the prices have pretty much stayed the same. So without these sales, a lot of players probably wouldn't spend much money at all.

Let's hope it will always be like this. But now it's been quite a while that PGI are giving Champion Mechs as rewards for their event, which is realy nice, even though it's not always that easy to earn those rewards.
Weekly sales on MC prices have been here since beta, but the savings on CBills prices are rather new (6 months or so, i think).

The MWO and PGI anniversary 3-Mechs pack will probably be some kind of a unique, greatly appreciated feature.

I'm of teh Opposite opinion Xtrem. I don't want to feel they Owe me freebies. And if they give away things to often it will feel that way eventually. I don't wanna be on the dole.

Considering the prices of some packs, especially the clan ones, i think it's a good thing that they give away some stuff, so you don't feel like they're only here for your money.
Also, i think it helps the free-to-play model as if you don't put money in the game, you're stuck with only 4 mechbays which kind of limit the fun. A few free mechs makes the game more appealing for the new players also.

I totally get your opinion: I don't want those freebies to become some kind of a norm too.
But so far, it's been great with the little few we received, so i hope it stay that way.

I really like those challenges where you can earn some mechbays or even a mech from time to time.

Not that I need any of those anymore, but we have some "free" and newer players and for those this is a big help in getting into the game. Especially mech bays are good to keep new players in the game.

they do sales and giveaway events pretty frequently; the current run of faction sales on colors/vanity items is a little unusual, but you can expect something or other to be on sale at least once a week in general practice, and for there to be a weekend event or two each month where you can earn additional swag.

which is good, because to be honest most of the stuff in the store is flagrantly overpriced on the sticker

Sales: yes, or at least it's becoming more of the norm. It makes sense though, as they need a steady cash flow so always having something on offer helps keep it coming.

Giveaways: not so much, but it's picking up. The contests and tournaments are now mostly monthly

Freebies: not that common, though there have been a lot recently. The only exception is free membership time when the servers are down for an extended period, though that's more of a rebate than a freebie (and its highly appreciated).

Don't forget this as well...

We are post-Christmas season too. This might be a traditionally low point in spending for consumers and PGI is using sales to try and boost income in a light spending period.

I'm guessing the summer months might also spawn some good deals as well.

I think the gift items are more of a gesture of good will to the community. I think they are trying to build some better bonds with the players to help curb a lot of the negativity that has been floating around. Sort of ties in with the challenges, stocking stuffers, and amnesty program.

That's just what I take away from all this.

Things have been a lot better since PGI parted ways with their old publisher, Infinite Boat Anchor... er, Infinite Games Publishing. The current trend of frequent give aways and promos has been going on since just before Halloween.

I will say this too.

Whether you like the Urbanmech or Hate it, it would never had become a reality under IGP.

I'm guessing the Urbanmech funding drive we just had generated just enough funds to warrant making the little guy (even if it shares assets like arms, legs, and hip). This is by no means going to be a big profit item (especially with how polar opposite the opinions tend to be about the mech).

If IGP was still in the picture, I have a feeling this wouldn't have even been considered. Even if it had, the amount of preorders would have had to been much higher. Plus there would have been a $500 gold Urbanmech too lol.
