I've tried SRM + Artemis and didn't noticed any improvement. IMHO 2 extra tons of ammo are much better.

honestly its hard to tell where the differnece between a speedhack and legit hitreg exploiting is with the current MWO hitreg. yeriously, FS and Ravens are mechs that I sometimes don't even try to shoot at anymore

I had a similar situation on alpine on the weekend a huginn came swarming me, it ate a 6x CERML and around 20 CERSL fully visible, and had just a open leg and open arm.
And people who do not know how rubbish hitreg can be can easily think of hacks, because hitreg is very matchdependend, it sometimes works, sometimes not, just as the server pleases.

Every once in a while I'll catch and kill a light in mid air with my AC20. Makes all the misses worth while.

Legs are very vulnerable for most mechs. The only reason they aren't the only place I target is because in a normal fight you usually can't get los to legs most of the time.
