Most people tend to focus on one range or the other, but I, on the other hand, like to built well rounded mechs that move and cool quickly, and can always be active in a battle.

I consider a skirmisher to be a mech equipped for speed with a versatile weapon loadout, being able to engage at close, medium, and long range. They don't lead the charge in, but instead support their comrades in any given situation. Due to this, they perform below average in all combat scenarios, but they can consistently be active no matter how they are oriented. An example would be a mech equipped with srms for close range, medium lasers + a low calibure autocannon for medium ranges, and lrms for long range.

I do well in combat, but I get very few kills as I focus on helping out allies in need. If I see a teamate 1v1ing an opponent far away, I light their target up with volleys of lrms. If I see a group engaged somewhere else, I use my speed to get there and bring down their target.

As mentioned before, my kdr suffers at around 1.0~1.15, but my win ratio is at around 1.33.

You always hear about boats these days, but little, if anything about skirmishers. Is this niche something that should be filled as a standard part of a team, or is it more of an exotic build that should be used only for preference?

I'm one of those pilots, that makes a point not to specialize in any one area, and also one that doesn't subscribe to laser vomiting... cERPPC's over cLPL in most cases... You get the idea...

Do I top damage charts or the kill board? Nope, but can I rapidly adjust to changing conditions? Yes, and I just good trigger discipline and heat management skills.

Throwing on LRMs as a backup weapon is doable for clan mechs, but IS LRMs are a pretty big weight commitment if you want to have enough to matter. I don't think I'd do it on anything smaller than an assault.

Usually if I want a backup weapon for a brawler to be able to engage at long range I use ERLLs, since they can also be used for a bigger alpha if I'm not heat-limited.

I generally prefer skirmishers, regardless the Meta.

Group meta =/ comp meta =/ pug meta.

Skirmishers do way better in pugs than coordinated comp teams.

Skirmishers are fun, especially in pug drops. Can you bring them to group queue? Sure, you just won't see as many as they'll tend to not be as effective.

The meta in skirmish is very frequently big engines/fast speed.

Is that what you are talking about?
